Tragwein – Hiking, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Tragwein
Tragwein offers several different ways to enjoy your stay: trails, the natural landscape along the Waldaist, the bathing lake, and insights into regional culture and production. If you are looking for a destination for active days, you can consider the routes by activity and difficulty level; nature and culture add to this focus.
Hiking Trails and Walks
Many hiking, Nordic walking and running routes of varying difficulty start in the centre of Tragwein. Two questions can help with your planning: Which activity would you like to do, and what level of difficulty is right for your route? The different difficulty levels provide an initial guide for comparing the routes.
The hiking trails have been GPS-surveyed and can be downloaded to navigation devices or mobile phones. You can transfer your chosen route to the device you will use for navigation along the way. This lets you supplement your planning with digital route guidance.
One specific example is the Tragwein East Circular Hiking Trail. It passes the Tragwein bathing lake and then returns to the market square. The route follows a clearly defined sequence: first the lake as a stopping point, then the return to the market square. Check trail conditions before setting out.
Two circular trails near Pankrazhofer run by and around the organic farm, inviting visitors to stroll, enjoy the surroundings and discover the orchard meadow and agricultural cycles. Here, the walk has a specific agricultural focus.
Natural Landscape and Bathing Lake
The Waldaist River in Tragwein is part of a European protected area and a habitat for the rare freshwater pearl mussel. The Upper Austrian Castle Museum Reichenstein includes a free, publicly accessible information centre about the Waldaist and Naarn European protected area and its flora and fauna, which are worthy of protection. For visitors interested in the area’s flora and fauna as well as its natural landscape, the centre offers a dedicated information focus.
The Tragwein bathing lake also has a distinctive feature: its bathing water is treated biologically. It flows through four smaller basins with gravel and plant filters and is enriched with oxygen via a waterfall. The filter basins and oxygenation are the key steps in this process.
Culture and Regional Production
The presbytery of Tragwein Parish Church is believed to have been built in the second half of the 14th century. This provides a period for historical context, not a single construction date for the entire church.
At the Bauernkrapfen pastry workshop, visitors can watch Bauernkrapfen being made by hand and try freshly baked pastries in a range of flavours. The selection may vary. The offering combines an insight into the production process with a tasting.
