Strass in the Zillertal lies at the entrance to the Zillertal, where the Ziller flows into the Inn. Rivers also serve as boundaries: to the north, the village is bordered by the Inn, to the east by the Ziller and to the west by the Rotholzer Bach. The area also has a history of chapels and churches, as well as cycling and pilgrimage routes. If you are looking for a hotel in the Zillertal, these different themes may play a role in choosing where to stay.

Chapels and Church History

The Raffl Chapel, dedicated to Saint Mary and located near the Raffl farms, was built by Jakob Singer in 1743. It was renovated and rededicated in 1977/78. These two dates offer a glimpse into its construction and preservation history, spanning from its construction in the 18th century to its later renovation.

A 36-page church guide is available at the parish church of St. James. It offers another point of interest for anyone interested in ecclesiastical architecture. The Raffl Chapel and the parish church offer different points of reference: one is a chapel with a recorded construction date and renovation, while the other has a concise church guide.

Cycling in the Zillertal

The Zillertal Cycle Path begins in Strass on the left bank of the Ziller and runs via Schlitters, FĂĽgen and Uderns to Kaltenbach. It is described as an easy, family-friendly route with no significant climbs. Most of the path is paved, with only short sections running over gravel. Its route, character and surface are therefore useful points of reference when choosing a cycling route for your stay.

There is also specific information about combining cycling and rail travel. City bikes, children's bikes, child seats and helmets can be rented and returned at the Zillertalbahn stations. ZVB AG rental bikes are carried free of charge on Zillertalbahn trains, provided there is space on the train. When planning, you can therefore distinguish between renting bikes at stations and taking a ZVB rental bike on the train; taking a bike on board is expressly subject to sufficient space being available.

The Way of St. James and the Inn Cycle Path

The Tyrolean Way of St. James runs from Strass along the Lindenallee and on to Rotholz, Jenbach and Stans. Via the Lindenallee, the route continues from Strass to Rotholz, Jenbach and Stans. If you are interested in pilgrimage routes, you can consider this section as a focus in its own right.

Another route detail concerns the fifth stage of the Inn Cycle Path: at the entrance to the Zillertal, it passes Rotholz Castle and offers beautiful views of the pilgrimage church of the Visitation of Mary at Brettfall. Rotholz Castle, originally called “Thurnegg”, was built between 1575 and 1585 as a hunting and pleasure palace, commissioned by the Tyrolean sovereign, Archduke Ferdinand II. This stage thus combines a route at the entrance to the Zillertal with views of the church, while the castle’s history adds a historical dimension.

The routes described have different paths and focal points. This gives you a way to understand Strass through specific routes and buildings before looking for suitable hotels for your stay.
