Pankrazberg: Church, Nativity Scene and Mountain Views
Accommodation in Pankrazberg
Pankrazberg can be explored through several specific interests: the history of the branch church of St. Pankraz, its Christmas nativity scene on display all year round, walking and hiking trails, and a named mountain bike route. When planning your trip, you can consider cultural history, walking trails and cycling as separate focal points.
St. Pankraz Church: Building History and Nativity Scene
The Catholic branch church of St. Pankraz in Pankrazberg, along with its surrounding wall and the remains of earlier buildings, is protected as a historic monument by decree. The present-day church was built from 1494 to 1497; from 1520 to 1522, it was extended to the west. These two periods distinguish the construction of the present-day building from a later phase of construction.
The Christmas nativity scene in St. Pankraz offers another glimpse into the past. It dates from 1763 and is on display in the church all year round. It was created by Petrus Schmid from Kleinboden, who lived by the Finsingbach stream. The figures have Venetian glass eyes. The nativity scene can therefore be understood through both its origins and date, as well as a distinctive detail of its design.
The Pankrazberg local farmers’ association supports preparations for the annual Zillertal cattle drive. This offers a different point of reference for planning your visit than the nativity scene: the nativity scene is on display all year round, while the cattle drive is an annual event.
Viewpoint and Protected Landscape
Berger Bichl is a viewpoint overlooking the Zillertal mountains. A different aspect of the landscape is the protected landscape area “Umgebung St. Pankraz” in Fügenberg, which covers 1.80 hectares. At Berger Bichl, the focus is on views of the mountains; “Umgebung St. Pankraz” is defined by its protected status and area. If nature is an important factor in your choice, these offer different points of interest: a viewpoint and a protected landscape.
Walking Trails and Mountain Bike Route
There are walking and hiking trails in the districts of Fügenberg and Pankrazberg for enjoying nature. One specific mountain biking option is the “Fügen – Kupfnerberg – Finsingtal – Hochfügen” route. It passes St. Pankraz Church and then continues to the entrance to the Finsingtal valley. On the return trip, the route reaches Pankrazberg before heading back to Fügen. The order is useful for finding your way: on this route, the entrance to the Finsingtal valley comes after the church; on the return trip, Pankrazberg is reached before returning to Fügen.
Hiking Bus in the 2026 Season
Hiking bus route 8333 runs from May 23 to October 26, 2026, and offers free transport. If you plan to use it on your trip, check the timetable before travelling.
When choosing accommodation for a stay in Pankrazberg, you can compare your interests with the different information available: the mountain bike route has a named itinerary with an outward and return journey; walking and hiking trails are listed for Fügenberg and Pankrazberg. For the cultural side, there is the church’s building history and the nativity scene with its own year of creation.
