Gasteig: Hiking, Cycling Routes and Historical Traces
Accommodation in Gasteig
If you’re looking for a hotel in Gasteig, you can plan your stay around three interests: hiking, cycling and historical sites. The routes connect with Gasteig in different ways: one loop takes you to the hamlet, one hike starts in the district, and cycling routes pass through Gasteig or head in its direction. There are also reminders of architectural history and the region’s past. Whichever of these themes matters most to you will give your trip planning a clear direction.
Historical Traces in Gasteig
The original 500-year-old farmhouse of the Tyrolean show dairy is now located in Gasteig. It was moved here from the family farm in Ellmau. To relocate it, the building was dismantled into 1,500 individual parts and reassembled at its current site. The Devil’s Chapel on the Opferstein in Gasteig-Griesenau dates from 1735 and was restored in 1983. Plague columns stand in Gasteig and on the Leukentalweg. The farmhouse stands out for its preserved condition and relocation, while the Devil’s Chapel has a documented construction date and restoration date.
Hiking between Gasteig and the Kaiserbachtal
On the flanking rock faces of the Teufelsgasse, there are around 1,500 scratched, scraped and pecked rock images across an area of almost 400 m². The hike to the Teufelsgasse starts at a small chapel by the hiking car park in Hinterberg. Hinterberg lies between the Kirchdorf hamlets of Gasteig and Griesenau.
The Kirchdorf Sonnseitrunde leads to the hamlet of Gasteig and past a small reservoir built in 1901/1902, which was once an important means of generating energy. The route and the reservoir’s former function give the loop a historical connection, too. A hike through the Kaiserbachtal starts in the district of Gasteig. In the Gasteig area, the valley runs through the Kaisergebirge Nature Reserve from the Kirchdorf district of Griesenau to the Stripsenjoch; a hiking trail runs along the Kaiserbach all year round. After the Metzgeralm, the hike descends on a forest road in the direction of Gasteig and Kramerhof.
The hiking trails connect with Gasteig in different ways: the Sonnseitrunde leads to the hamlet, the hike through the Kaiserbachtal starts in the district, and the Teufelsgasse hike starts in Hinterberg. So, when planning, it makes a difference whether Gasteig is your destination or simply the starting point for a tour.
Cycling Routes through and towards Gasteig
Cycling routes also connect with Gasteig in different ways. The Kaiserbachtal cycling route runs from the centre of Kirchdorf through Gasteig and onwards towards Schwendt and Kössen to Griesenau, before entering the Kaiserbachtal. MTB Route 231 starts in Kirchdorf in Tirol and initially heads towards Gasteig. On the return journey, MTB Route 250 follows a paved road to Gasteig. One route therefore passes through Gasteig on its way to the Kaiserbachtal, another initially heads towards the village, and Gasteig is part of the return journey on the third.
