In Preggraben, you can choose between hikes to mountain huts and summit tours. The starting points and elevations are particularly important for getting your bearings: Obere Hinterleitenhütte and Vorderleitenhütte are both at 1,578 m, but are reached by different routes and trails. Other hikes lead to Wildeggkogel or via Türkentörl and Lenzmoarkogel. This makes it easy from the outset to distinguish similarly named huts and identify each summit and waypoint.

Huts, Access and Starting Points

From Kraubath, the access route leads into Preggraben and continues along a toll road to Obere Hinterleitenhütte at 1,578 m. Vorderleitenhütte is also at 1,578 m, but is a different destination. From Almgasthof Spitzer in Preggraben, a relatively steep, direct ascent heads southeast to Vorderleitenhütte. Regional snacks are served there. The matching elevation is therefore not a reliable way to tell the huts apart; their names, starting points and routes are also important.

For the “GH Spitzer–Vorderleitenhütte–Speikkogel” route, drive or take a taxi from Sankt Lorenzen bei Knittelfeld via Preg and Preggraben to Almgasthof Spitzer. The toll-road approach from Kraubath and this access route to Almgasthof Spitzer are two distinct reference points. When planning your hike, you can first check which starting point goes with your chosen route: the access route to Obere Hinterleitenhütte or the starting area for the trail to Vorderleitenhütte.

To Wildeggkogel

Wildeggkogel is 1,792 m high. It can be climbed from Vorderleitenhütte, combining the hut destination with a summit. An Alpine Club trip report dated 28 July 2019 also describes a short detour from Preggraben to Wildeggkogel. These are different route options: a possible ascent from the hut and a detour along a hike starting in Preggraben.

The “221213 Wildeggkogel 1792m” hike starts at a small car park in Preggraben and leads via Untere and Obere Vorderleitenhütte to Wildeggkogel. Classified as a winter route, it includes both huts as named intermediate points. This distinguishes it from the possible ascent from Vorderleitenhütte, as its stated route specifically passes two huts. Check the parking situation before setting out by car and the snow conditions before starting your hike.

Türkentörl and Lenzmoarkogel

The “GH Spitzer–Vorderleitenhütte–Speikkogel” route passes via Türkentörl at 1,863 m and reaches Lenzmoarkogel at 1,991 m. Türkentörl is a named waypoint, while Lenzmoarkogel is the destination. The three elevations, in ascending order, are: Wildeggkogel at 1,792 m, Türkentörl at 1,863 m and Lenzmoarkogel at 1,991 m. You can use the waypoints to distinguish the route via Türkentörl and Lenzmoarkogel from the Wildeggkogel options.
