Steinhaus Am Semmering: Hiking and Railway Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Steinhaus Am Semmering
Several hiking routes meet around the Alois-GĂĽnther-Haus, while the Styrian Railway Hiking Trail offers a distinct cultural focus. In winter, a cross-country ski trail is also available, and the Semmeringradweg R46 also passes through the village. The routes differ mainly in their stated starting and ending points and in the type of experience they offer.
Hiking Trails and Summits Around the Alois-GĂĽnther-Haus
The Alois-GĂĽnther-Haus is located at the highest point of the Fischbach Alps. From the house, a five-minute mountain hike leads to the summit of the Stuhleck at 1,782 meters. This identifies two distinct points of reference: the house as a location in the Fischbach Alps, and the Stuhleck as a summit destination, with a specific hiking time given. The duration refers to the route from the house to the summit.
Several long-distance hiking trails are also linked to the Alois-Günther-Haus. The Zentralalpenweg leads there from Hirschenkogel or Mönichkirchen. The Planetenweg connects Rettenegg with the house, which is also a stop on the Styrian State Circular Hiking Trail. Hiking trails to the Alois-Günther-Haus start directly at the Steinhaus am Semmering or Spital am Semmering train stations. Both the different trail connections and the two explicitly named stations are therefore relevant for orientation.
Railway Hiking Trail and Regional History
The Styrian Railway Hiking Trail passes through Steinhaus Am Semmering and offers a brief cultural history of Styria at Semmering. It runs for around 17 kilometers through forests and meadows. Its route extends from Semmering station through Steinhaus am Semmering to MĂĽrzzuschlag station. From the direction of Steinhaus, the trail also leads to the northern Steinhauser Viaduct. Cultural history, landscape, and the named railway stations give this trail several distinct points of reference.
The historic Semmering Railway was built through the high mountains between 1848 and 1854, over a distance of 41 kilometers. The railway hiking trail offers a brief cultural history, while its route description names specific places and landscapes. This makes it possible to connect railway history with a trail that runs through forests and meadows and links Semmering and MĂĽrzzuschlag stations via Steinhaus.
Winter Cross-Country Ski Trail and Cycling Route
For winter, the Spital-Steinhaus-Semmering trail is another route option: it passes through Spital and Steinhaus Am Semmering in the direction of Semmering. This eight-kilometer trail is free to use. Grooming and snow conditions vary by season; check these conditions before a winter outing. In terms of length, season, and use, the trail therefore differs from the hiking routes described above.
The Semmeringradweg R46 adds a cycling route. It passes through Steinhaus Am Semmering before reaching the Semmering Pass. For trip planning, it can be distinguished from the hiking connections and the cross-country ski trail: it is a cycling route and, as described, continues from the village to the pass.
Another Historic Point of Interest
The former smelting furnace of the Alfred-Hütte stands at Fröschnitz 4 in Spital am Semmering; Steinhaus Am Semmering is nearby. It is protected as a historic monument by ordinance. This historic point of interest complements the railway history with a different object; both can be considered distinct themes for a stay in the region.
