Kindberg: Culture, Views and Architectural History
Accommodation in Kindberg
Kindberg can be explored through several themes: historic churches, details in the townscape, a viewpoint, the outdoor swimming pool and routes. This means you can focus your travel plans on different interests—from architectural history and art objects to impressions of the Mürz Valley.
Churches and Views in Kindberg
The Roman Catholic parish church of St Peter and Paul was originally built in the 13th century. In the 15th century, a wall with towers was built around the church, giving it the appearance of a fortified church. The sequence of dates—church construction in the 13th century, fortification in the 15th—reveals two distinct historical layers of the building.
The Calvary complex is located on a natural basalt rock. From the Calvary itself, there are views across Kindberg and the lower Mürz Valley. The town and the valley landscape are thus both in view. St George’s Church offers a different spatial accent: it stands on a rocky rise in the western part of the Kindberg urban area and overlooks the Mürz Valley.
Architecture, Stone and Objects in the Townscape
The cult stone consists of seven granite blocks, three of which are hewn. At the castle gate, the focus is on neoclassical design elements and the Inzaghi coat of arms in the centre. Twelve sheet-steel objects, created in 2011, line the path in Kopfallee. These places each make a different design statement: hewn granite blocks, neoclassical elements with a coat of arms, and a series of sheet-steel objects. The term Neoclassicism refers to a style in art and architecture that draws on the forms and proportions of Greek and Roman antiquity. Symmetry, clear organisation and restrained forms are considered typical features. At the castle gate, this context helps you recognise the neoclassical design accent alongside the centrally positioned Inzaghi coat of arms as a distinct motif.
Outdoor Swimming Pool and Getting Around
Kindberg outdoor swimming pool was built in 1876 and has been renovated several times since. It is located on Schlosswiese, right in the town. There are parking facilities for bicycles and cars nearby, as well as a bus stop. When planning a visit, both the location within the town and the nearby parking facilities and bus stop are useful to know about.
Routes and Cycle Route
The Schlossrunde starts in Kindberg town centre and leads to Oberkindberg Castle. The K3-Zeller-Tour starts in the village centre and offers a panoramic view at Bergbauern Zeller. The route descriptions feature different landmarks: the castle for the Schlossrunde and the panoramic view for the K3-Zeller-Tour. The Mürztalradweg R5 cycle route passes through Kindberg on its way from Mürzsteg to Bruck an der Mur. If you are planning a ride on the R5, check the current route conditions in advance.
