Liezen: Culture, Views and Tours
Accommodation in Liezen
Liezen offers a range of starting points for planning your trip: historic buildings, views across the Enns Valley, and several hiking and cycling routes; Pyhrn also has a natural toboggan run. You can tailor your stay to culture, scenery or outdoor activities.
Culture and Views in Liezen
The parish church in Liezen is dedicated to Saint Vitus. Its original Romanesque structure was first mentioned in 1150. The Calvary Chapel is located on Salberg and was probably built in the Baroque style in 1720. From the area in front of the chapel, you can see across the Enns Valley to the Grimming and the Schladming Tauern. These offer two distinct points of interest: the church is notable for its dedication and first recorded mention, while the chapel combines Baroque architectural history with scenic views.
Another perspective on the region’s cultural heritage can be found at the Wöhr Forge. It is fully equipped, with all its tools and work equipment. The old townhouse with its forge has been preserved in its original form. The Africa Museum houses various trophies, weapons, photographs and records belonging to the African explorer Hermann von Wissmann. The subjects are quite different: one is about traditional craft equipment and a preserved townhouse, the other about museum objects and records. If you plan to visit the museum, check visiting arrangements in advance.
Hiking: Times and Destinations
The Lexgraben Tour reaches its highest point, at 1,260 metres, after about 1.5 hours. Towards the end, there is an opportunity to see the head of the WeiĂźenbach Valley and its waterfall. The Rote Wand Tour is an approximately three-hour circular route with lovely viewpoints overlooking the town of Liezen, the Grimming and the Dachstein. The times refer to different things: about 1.5 hours to reach the highest point, and around three hours for the circular route. This makes it easier to factor the stated times into your plans.
Cycling, Climbing and Tobogganing
Liezen is on the Enns Valley Cycle Route R7. It follows the Enns through meadows and fields, away from public roads, and is particularly suitable for families. A mountain biking route over 10 km long leads to the alpine pastures of the Hintereggeralm. The Hinteregger Alm is an alpine pasture area covering 184 hectares in the municipality of Liezen, Styria. It lies north of Liezen, at the foot of the Hochangern mountain range, at the southern end of the Totes Gebirge, at an elevation of about 1,150 to 1,350 metres.
The City-Rock Liezen climbing centre regularly offers courses for beginners and advanced climbers. Another activity is the natural toboggan run in Lexgraben, Pyhrn, a district of Liezen; it invites visitors to go tobogganing. The options mentioned range from courses and cycling tours to hiking and tobogganing.
