Gatschberg: Trails, Roads and History
Accommodation in Gatschberg
You can get to know Gatschberg for trip planning through several specific points of reference: a stage of the Panoramaweg 100, road routes through the area, and a distinctive landscape with a history of settlement. These topics answer different questions. The hiking information specifies difficulty and duration, while the road routes pass through named places. The landscape and local history add their own points of reference to the tours when you are considering Gatschberg as a destination.
Hiking the Panoramaweg 100
The first stage of the Panoramaweg 100 south of the Enns runs from Ă–blarn via Gatschberg and Stein an der Enns to Michaelerberg. It is rated easy and takes 5.5 hours. This duration applies to the entire stage, not just the section near Gatschberg. Difficulty and time required are therefore two separate planning considerations. If you are considering this hike, you can treat the 5.5 hours as the time frame for the complete route from Ă–blarn to Michaelerberg.
Road routes and directions
There are two other specific road-route references for planning a drive. The access road for the “Großes Bärneck von Mößna” tour follows the L704 Erzherzog-Johann-Straße through Gatschberg, Feista and Fleiß to Mößna. The sequence of place names makes Gatschberg’s location along this access route easy to follow. The 3 Ländertour also passes through Mößna, Fleiß, Großsölk, Gatschberg and Pruggern as a motorcycle and classic-car tour. Its concept connects Styria, Salzburg and Carinthia. The two road descriptions have different focuses: the L704 description specifies an access route, while the 3 Ländertour focuses on vehicle types and federal states.
Landscape and history
Gatschberg’s hamlet landscape covers a terrace divided into three parts by gullies; it lies above the gorge where the two Sölker streams meet. The terrace, gullies and gorge together describe the landscape’s physical form. Gatschberg’s historic “front village” was originally a Schwaige, a type of farmstead. This history adds insight into the area’s settlement history to the description of the landscape. Gatschberg is also located on the road from Stein an der Enns to Großsölk. This location along the road offers its own geographical reference to the area, alongside the tour routes.
A dated event at the chapel
A May devotion was held at Gatschberg Chapel on May 8, 2026. If you would like to plan to attend a devotion during a later visit, check the relevant date; future dates may vary.
