Flavia Solva offers a glimpse into Roman urban history, guided tours are organized in the Lagerstadt Wagna, and the Resurrection Trail has several named stations. The Roman village hosts recurring events; the Roman Cave features an exhibition on the history of mining. Decide whether you would like to include an event, a guided tour, a trail or a historical exhibition in your plans.

Flavia Solva: Urban Planning and Finds

Flavia Solva is the only Roman city in Styria. Planned as a drawing-board city, it had straight streets laid out to intersect at right angles; the blocks of houses were also arranged evenly. The term describes an urban design: streets and blocks follow a regular pattern. This means Flavia Solva can be viewed not only through individual finds, but also through the city’s overall planned layout.

The Flavia Solva archaeological site displays selected finds from the excavations carried out by the Joanneum in the urban area of Flavia Solva for over a hundred years. Urban planning and artefacts offer different perspectives: the planned layout draws attention to the whole, while the selected finds represent individual pieces of evidence. When exploring Flavia Solva, you can consider these two scales side by side.

Lagerstadt and Roman Village

In the Lagerstadt Wagna, the “Kulturforum Flavia Solva” association organizes guided tours on behalf of the municipality of Wagna. Confirm the current arrangements before your trip if you would like to plan a guided tour. Since last year, the municipality has invited visitors once a quarter to the Lagercafé at the former camp barracks in the Roman village. Check the dates in advance, as event dates may change. These are two different formats to consider when planning: an organized tour in the Lagerstadt and a recurring café at the former barracks.

Every Wednesday, the Roman village of Wagna invites visitors to relax, enjoy themselves and celebrate with a varied music program. Check the date before your visit, as the program may change. The Wednesday program and the quarterly Lagercafé therefore have different schedules: weekly and once a quarter.

At the weekly “Roman gathering” in the Roman village of Wagna, “Wagna – unsa Bier” is available. It is a fruity, pale full-bodied beer brewed exclusively with hops from Leitring. Product details may change, so check current availability before your trip.

Resurrection Trail and Roman Cave

The Resurrection Trail leads to Wagna parish church, passing the Italian Cemetery in Wagna and crossing the Silberwald along a well-maintained forest trail. The church, cemetery and stretch through the forest give the trail different thematic stations. The Resurrection Trail is also cycle route R6. If you use this designation as a guide, check the current route name before planning, as it may change.

The Roman Cave is an accessible mine tunnel with an exhibition on the 2,000-year history of Austria’s oldest mine that is still active. Those interested in mining history will find the tunnel and a historical exhibition here as a distinct focus. This differs from Flavia Solva, where the planned layout of a Roman city and selected finds are the main focus.

Visiting the Roman Quarry

The temperature in the Roman Quarry is 8°C year-round; warm clothing and sturdy footwear are recommended.
