Accommodation in Straß in der Steiermark
The sights and experiences offer different highlights: the Attemsmoor represents protected nature, the churches and castle offer architecture and history, while the ferry and guided tours put the Mur in the spotlight.
Attemsmoor and nature in the Mur floodplains
Covering around 15 hectares, the Attemsmoor is the only moor in the Mur Valley outside the Alps. This protected wetland is home to an exceptional variety of wildlife and plant life. A secure boardwalk leads through the moor; it is also located on the floodplain and moor cycling trail. This distinction is useful for finding your way: the boardwalk leads through the wetland, while the cycling trail is described as a route by the moor.
Birdwatching and peaceful stays surrounded by greenery are also among the nature activities available. The birdwatching station in the village of Obervogau is a freely accessible spot for observing birds in the Mur floodplains. Walking paths in the freely accessible Aupark Vogau invite you to enjoy some peace and quiet; the natural landscaping includes shady seating and an idyllic pond. If you plan to visit these places, check current access information before you go.
Church, castle and museum
Straß Parish Church, also known as the Church of the Assumption of Mary, was built between 1625 and 1628 as the castle church of the Eggenbergs. It is an example of early Baroque religious architecture and is a listed monument. Its construction dates and original function provide a specific historical context for the building; architecturally, the church can also be assigned to the early Baroque period.
Schloss Spielfeld offers a different highlight. It was built between 1580 and 1620 and rebuilt after a fire in 1631. Its defining features include Renaissance column arcades on four floors and a spacious courtyard. The ensemble provides a setting for cultural events. Schloss Spielfeld has no regular public opening hours; check in advance whether a visit is possible.
The military museum at Erzherzog-Johann-Kaserne in Straß in der Steiermark presents the history of the region and the Austrian Federal Army in three rooms. Its focus therefore differs from the architectural history of the church and castle: here, the emphasis is on regional and military history.
The Mur, cycling trail and guided tours
The Weitersfeld Mur ferry is located directly on the Mur cycling trail and is the last intact cable ferry on the Mur. For cyclists, its location on the route provides a specific point of reference; the ferry’s historic character also gives the crossing a distinctive connection to the river. If you plan to take the ferry, check the current timetable.
Mur Pur – The Styrian Mur Experience offers guided canoe and rafting tours through the Mur floodplains. These tours differ from a self-planned bike ride in that they are guided and travel takes place on the water. Check the provider’s current information before booking.
