Steinriegel combines architectural history with sacred art; in the Kitzeck area, hiking trails, Kneipp-related activities and winegrowing are also part of the picture. This lets you tailor your trip to cultural, active or regional interests.

Architectural History and Church Art

The 1st Styrian Wine Museum is housed in a winemaker’s house dating from the early 18th century. The building was extended in 1910 and is a listed monument. Its architectural history can therefore be traced through two dates: the house’s early origins and its later extension. Its protected status adds another dimension to its architectural significance.

The Kitzeck parish church is located at Steinriegel 57 and was built between 1640 and 1644. It is dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows; its high altar features a Pietà. A Pietà depicts Mary with the dead Christ. The church’s construction dates, dedication and high altar image thus provide distinct historical and artistic points of reference.

The Marian Chapel at Steinriegel 54 is also a listed monument. It adds a separate sacred site to Steinriegel’s protected buildings. The addresses given make it possible to identify the parish church and chapel clearly.

Hiking and Wine Routes in the Kitzeck Area

The municipality of Kitzeck lists Trail K3 – In the Footsteps of the Romans (Kitzeck–Einöd) among its local hiking trails. The Kitzeck Wine Hiking Trail K8 starts at the Kitzeck Wine Museum. Their names point to different themes: K3’s name refers to Roman history, while K8 is identified as a wine hiking trail. Together, they offer a clearly defined starting point and two distinct trail themes.

The Sausal Wine Road runs from Fresing through mixed forest to Kitzeck and passes through the Sausal wine-growing region, home to Austria’s highest-altitude vineyards. From Kitzeck, it continues to Demmerkogel, the highest point in the Sausal, and via Sausalerberg to Maierhof in the Sulm Valley. The sequence of places makes the route easy to follow without reducing its different sections to a single viewpoint or destination.

Kitzeck as a whole offers numerous hiking trails for discovering nature. You can end the day there with a small glass of wine and a typical Styrian snack.

Kneipp Activities and Local Handcrafts

The Kitzeck Kneipp area includes a water column for Kneipp treatments, a foot exercise trail, seating and freshly planted herbs. The Place of Joy | Kitzeck Kneipp Area also presents the five pillars of Kneipp: water, herbs, nutrition, exercise and a balanced lifestyle. These features describe both the specific facilities and the broader Kneipp concept: water and herbs sit alongside topics such as nutrition, exercise and a balanced lifestyle.

In making soap, Sabine’s Soaps uses local ingredients such as pumpkin seed oil, wine, honey and propolis. These ingredients give the craft a clear regional connection. Visits outside opening hours are possible by prior telephone arrangement; if you plan such a visit, be sure to call ahead.

Regional Cuisine

At Restaurant DAS KAPPEL, predominantly regional specialties are prepared in a contemporary style. This specific description of the cuisine complements the broader Kitzeck combination of hiking trails, wine and Styrian snacks. Your trip can therefore focus on different things: architectural and church art in Steinriegel, named routes in the Kitzeck area, and regional crafts and cuisine.
