Grafendorf bei Hartberg lies in the rolling hills of Eastern Styria, at the foot of the Masenberg. The market town combines a rich cultural history with hiking trails through the countryside. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on churches and historic sites, a hike, or both. Grafendorf is on the Thermenbahn railway line and the Gleisdorf–Hartberg–Vienna RegioBus route. If you are travelling by public transport, check the timetables before setting off.

Churches, Castles and Local History

The history of Kirchberg Castle dates back to the 12th century: around 1130, Count Ekbert II of Formbach-Pitten founded the castle as an administrative centre for his estates south of the Wechsel mountains. The Chapel of St Mary in Kirchberg am Walde Castle was built in 1752. Kirchberg am Walde Castle/Agricultural College is listed as a protected monument in the Federal Monuments Authority’s register dated 23 June 2026.

Other protected sites also offer insight into different periods and functions. The register dated 23 June 2026 lists the Roman-era Villa Rustica II, the Lebernholz barrow group and the Catholic parish church of St Michael in Grafendorf bei Hartberg as protected monuments. The list also includes the Chapel of the Cross, formerly a cemetery chapel, and the Catholic branch church of St Pankratz near Grafendorf. The Chapel of the Cross contains a Dance of Death depiction created by Johann Cyriak Hackhofer in 1724.

The pilgrimage church of St Pankrazen also offers an architectural point of interest: its main axis and altar face west rather than east. A church dedicated to St Pankrazen was first mentioned in a document in 1544. During the warm summer months, the pilgrimage church is open to visitors when the Mesnerhäusl operates at weekends; throughout the year, it can be viewed through a small window near the church entrance. Check visitor information before you travel.

Modern art and historical context come together at other sites. Aichberg Castle now serves as a venue for modern art and cultural exhibitions. Reitenau Castle houses the Chapel of St Francis Xavier. The Grafendorf Local History Museum displays objects relating to the geological development of the landscape, prehistory and early history, and the medieval settlement period through to the emancipation of the peasants. Visits are arranged individually, so please arrange yours in advance.

Hiking and Experiencing the Landscape

The municipality’s hiking network comprises six trails. The Pankratius Trail passes partly through a nature park and mostly through a protected natural landscape. Views along the route extend as far as Slovenia, the Pannonian Plain and the Alpine foothills of the Wechsel mountains. Check local conditions for individual trails before planning your hike.

One clearly described longer option is the signposted 21.8-kilometre Three Castles Hike. This circular trail starts in Grafendorf bei Hartberg and leads to Reitenau, Kirchberg and Aichberg castles. Signposting and trail conditions may change, so check the latest information before setting off. If you would rather take a historic walk through the town, the 60s Roas offers a route through the market town: its ten stops explore the origins of the individual districts or localities.

For cyclists, the Three Castles Tour in Hartbergland is another option. It is just under 30 kilometres long and fully paved, but includes many climbs, making it suitable only for sporty cyclists or e-bike riders. The route details and suitability information can help you choose between a hike and a more challenging bike tour, without treating the two as equivalent.

The Beistein is also part of the landscape: this large rock is considered Grafendorf bei Hartberg’s local mountain and stands at an elevation of 813 metres. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between cultural sites, a historical walk and trails through the countryside.
