For planning your trip, Kleinstübing offers several specific points of interest: the Austrian Open-Air Museum Stübing, protected monuments, and hiking and cycling connections. There is also an S1 line railway station in the Kleinstübing district; the area around Pfaffenkogel adds a landscape-related point of interest. You can start by considering whether culture, a particular route or landscape views should be the focus of your stay.

Cultural Sites and Crafts

Kleinstübing is best known for the Austrian Open-Air Museum Stübing. The museum includes more than 100 historic buildings and is one of the ten largest museums of its kind in Europe. The open-air museum is therefore a clear cultural point of interest for trip planning.

At the museum, visitors can try their hand at traditional crafts. Examples include making shingles, baking bread, doughnuts and strudel, carving spoons and spinning. The range extends from craftwork to baking and spinning activities. Activities on offer may vary; if you have a particular activity in mind, check in advance whether it will be available during your visit.

Schloss Stübing in Kleinstübing and the Roman-era settlement of Kleinstübing are also protected as monuments by decree under Section 3. The Federal Monuments Authority lists both in its register dated 23 June 2026 with this protection status; the settlement is also designated as an archaeological monument from the Roman era. For cultural planning, these are two distinct points of interest: a named castle and a Roman settlement with archaeological monument status.

Hiking, Cycling and Getting There

For hikers, the fourth stage of the Graz Mountainland Hiking Trail starts in Kleinstübing. The route “Around Rannach to Kleinstübing” starts at Kleinstübing railway station and uses the Gustmobil shuttle to the GH Martinelli/Steinmetzwirt stop, the starting point of the route. This means the town itself is named as the starting point for the fourth stage, while the Rannach route also includes a shuttle ride to its starting stop. Check route details and shuttle arrangements before setting off.

The Pfaffenkogelsteig can be reached by bicycle via the Mur Cycle Path to Kleinstübing. Pilgrimage Tour 742 passes through Kleinstübing and follows the Mur Cycle Path from there to the Austrian Open-Air Museum Stübing. The focus of the Pfaffenkogelsteig is on getting there by bicycle; Pilgrimage Tour 742, meanwhile, runs through the town and along the Mur Cycle Path to the museum.

The S1 line railway station is located in the Kleinstübing district. If you are planning to travel by train, check the current S1 timetable before your trip.

Landscape Around Pfaffenkogel

In the area around Kleinstübing, the nature reserve around Pfaffenkogel and its summit offer striking photo opportunities, as well as views of the Mur flowing at the foot of the mountain. For photography enthusiasts, this landscape setting combines the summit and nature reserve with a clear view of the river.
