Aflenz Kurort lies on the southern flank of the Hochschwab massif in a sheltered location with a favourable climate. The spa town’s history includes two dated designations: Aflenz was designated a health resort with a therapeutic climate in 1920 and received the designation of a high-altitude resort with a therapeutic climate in 1979.

Forest and Nature Trails

The forest nature trail starts above the outdoor swimming pool and follows easy paths through a woodland landscape typical of the region. At 26 stations, you can learn about the forest habitat; the trail also includes a faithfully reconstructed lumberjack’s hut. This means that both the information along the trail and the hut as a feature in its own right are highlights.

The Kneipp and bird nature trail has a different thematic focus. Its 20 information boards cover commonly occurring bird species, and there are also nesting boxes for cavity-nesting birds. The two nature trails therefore differ mainly in their themes: the forest nature trail focuses on the forest habitat, while the Kneipp and bird nature trail focuses on bird species and nesting boxes.

There is also a medicinal herb trail in the wider Aflenz region, with nine marked stations where a particularly large variety of medicinal herbs can be found. This themed trail is in the wider Aflenz region and should therefore be distinguished from the trails with specifically named starting points in Aflenz Kurort.

BĂĽrgeralm and Tours

Aflenz BĂĽrgeralm serves as a starting point for challenging tours into the nearby Hochschwab massif. The approximately 400 m-long panoramic via ferrata is on its southern side. These details describe different options around BĂĽrgeralm: tours into the Hochschwab massif and the via ferrata on the southern side.

Lift operations to Aflenz BĂĽrgeralm ended in March 2025. BĂĽrgeralm can only be reached via the panoramic road, on foot or by bicycle. Road conditions and seasonal operations may change; check access before your trip.

The BĂĽrgeralm panoramic road leads from Aflenz, below the Pierergut inn at an altitude of 1,000 m, to BĂĽrgeralm at 1,500 m; it is approximately 8 km long. If you plan to travel via this road, the stated elevations and approximate length can help you get a sense of the route.

Provostry, Church and Spa Park

The north wing of Aflenz Provostry retains a medieval building structure because the renovation and Baroque remodelling by Domenico Sciassia between 1660 and 1693 were left unfinished. The provostry is also linked to the valley’s former administration: until 1848, the abbots of St. Lambrecht administered the entire Aflenz Valley as landowners from here.

The parish church of St. Peter in Aflenz was built around 1500 and is dedicated to Saint Peter. A heritage-listed pavilion and a bust of Sebastian Kneipp stand in Aflenz Spa Park. Together, these places show different aspects of the town’s history: the provostry’s medieval building structure, the history of the church, and the two named features in the spa park.
