Idyllically situated Rosenau Castle is one of the most significant artistic monuments in the Waldviertel region. The Renaissance building, remodelled in the Baroque style, has housed the Austrian Freemasonry Museum since 1975—the only Freemasonry museum in Austria. For a culture-focused visit, the building’s history and the museum offer two distinct highlights.

Castle History and Architecture

The estate originated with the expansion of the existing Wernhartshof in 1593, resulting in a four-sided, enclosed Renaissance complex around a rectangular courtyard. Under Leopold Christoph von Schallenberg, Rosenau Castle was remodelled in the Baroque style from 1736 to 1747. The dates mark successive phases: 1593 refers to the expansion of the older manor house, while the Baroque remodelling was a later alteration to the estate.

On the west side of the castle is the late Baroque parish church of the Holy Trinity, a centrally planned building with a cruciform ground plan. Unlike the rectangular courtyard of the Renaissance complex, this ground plan describes an independent architectural form. The former lodge rooms are on the first floor. The frescoes, dating from around 1747, are attributed to Daniel Gran. A centrally planned building is arranged around a central point.

Guided Tours

Guided tours of the attraction “Rosenau Castle and its estate settlement” can be booked year-round by prior appointment. Two options are available for the estate settlement: the short tour takes about 90 minutes, while the extended tour takes about 2.5 hours. The difference is approximately one hour, providing a concrete comparison to help plan your day. Durations are approximate; arrange your preferred tour time in advance.

Rosenau Castle Circular Hiking Trail

The Rosenau Castle circular hiking trail starts and ends at Schlosshotel Rosenau. Below the castle, it passes through the old chestnut avenue and the forest, then via Oberneustift, Neuwald, Jahrings and Guttenbrunn before returning to the castle. The route thus combines sections through the avenue and forest with several named places. It offers a different perspective on the area than the castle grounds alone.

Bismarck Tower and Midsummer Celebration

Bismarck Tower stands about 1 km northeast of Rosenau Castle, on a small hill amid a circular meadow of about 6 hectares. A midsummer celebration is held every year on Bismarck Meadow. If you plan to travel for the event, check the date in advance. This lets you factor the annual celebration into your travel plans without confusing it with a guided tour that can be booked year-round.
