The emerald-green Lake Lunz, cultural history and a UNESCO World Heritage Centre give a stay in Lunz am See a range of possible focuses. If you are looking for a hotel, you can make your choice based on whether you mainly want to swim, learn about local history or set aside time for cycling and mountain tours.

Lake and lakeside stage

Lake Lunz is Lower Austria’s only natural lake and lies at the foot of imposing mountains. Lunz lido offers the pleasure of swimming in crystal-clear water. Hans Kupelwieser designed the lakeside stage; wellenklængen designed it in 2004, and the municipality of Lunz built it. During the day, the lakeside stage is open to bathers as a sun island. The lake itself and its distinctive stage thus offer different sides of a stay.

Cultural history in Lunz am See

Amonhaus is a manor house dating from the mid-16th century. Master Ofner had it built in the Renaissance style in 1551; the house includes an original smoke kitchen and sumptuous rooms. The exhibition at the Hammerherrenmuseum Lunz am See uses notable exhibits, clothing, pictures and documents to give an impression of the working and living conditions of the ironmasters, as well as farmers, charcoal burners and lumberjacks. In Lunz, you can therefore encounter both the stately rooms of a manor house and insights into a range of historical ways of life and work. The Church of Our Lady in Lunz was first mentioned in 1392.

House of Wilderness and visitor information

The House of Wilderness is a UNESCO World Heritage Centre. Its exhibition uses modern technology to offer insights into the largest primeval forest in the Alpine arc, in the Dürrenstein-Lassingtal Wilderness Area. Anyone wishing to enter the protected area can do so only on guided hikes and along marked trails. Free parking is available directly in front of the House of Wilderness. Public transport access is via the Lunz am See Schulen bus stop.

Every two years, WasserCluster Lunz holds an open day for interested visitors. The next date will be announced separately; check the announcement if you would like to plan your stay around it.

Cycling and hiking

The Ybbstal Cycle Path passes the House of Wilderness. Its 55-kilometre central section between Waidhofen an der Ybbs and Lunz am See follows the route of the former Ybbstal railway. The section is completely flat, runs away from motor traffic and stays close to the river throughout. The Mostviertel rail bike offers a different way to travel along the Ybbs: it starts at Lunz am See station and follows narrow railway tracks towards Göstling as far as the Klein Großau turnaround station. You reach it after just under five kilometres. The rail bike runs seasonally from May to October; check the current dates before setting off.

There are also a range of options on foot and in the mountains. Lunz am See offers easy walks, challenging mountain tours and several alpine climbing routes. The Three Lakes Tour hike begins at the parking areas by Lake Lunz, at an altitude of about 750 metres. For skiers, the Maiszinken ski area has 4.5 kilometres of pistes, with runs of all difficulty levels. Each of these activities offers a different focus when planning your stay.
