In Lackenhof, summer hikes are just one of the many options, alongside skiing, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. When planning your stay, you can therefore start by considering the time of year and then the type of activity you have in mind: a forest route with stations has a different focus from a hike lasting several hours; in winter, there are also various additional routes and sports to choose from.

Hiking: from the Story Trail to longer hikes

The Lackenhof Story Trail is a forest route approximately 5.5 kilometres long, with seven installations. Along the way, there are opportunities to rest, listen and smell, as well as to build a stone cairn. The route combines a manageable length with a variety of stops and activities along the way.

For a longer hike, the moderately difficult Lackenhof–Ötschergräben–Erlaufklause route starts in the town centre. It is 13.99 kilometres long and takes about five hours. Compared with the Story Trail, this requires considerably more time when planning your hike. Trail conditions can change, so check them before setting out. The “From Lackenhof to the Ötscher” hike also starts in the town centre.

For three Tut-gut hiking routes, Weitental, opposite the valley station of the GroĂźer Ă–tscher double chairlift, is the shared starting and finishing point. There are also well-marked hiking trails and mountain biking routes of all difficulty levels around the Ă–tscherdorf village of Lackenhof. When choosing a route, you will therefore find both a clearly designated starting point for these three routes and a broad range of trails and routes.

Winter Trails, Skiing and Cross-Country Skiing

The Lackenhof am Ă–tscher ski area has a total of 19 kilometres of pistes. There are also two signposted ski touring routes: one leads to the Ă–tscher Schutzhaus mountain refuge, the other to the Kleiner Ă–tscher. Ski touring and uphill travel on the pistes are possible on selected routes and on all pistes; the relevant winter conditions and operating rules apply.

Lackenhof has 33 kilometres of well-groomed cross-country ski trails. Grooming and snow conditions vary by season. There are also 12 kilometres of winter hiking trails and three permanently signposted snowshoe trails. These options differ in how you get around: you can plan your winter activities around cross-country skiing, winter hiking or snowshoeing, and check the conditions for your chosen route in advance.

One specific snowshoe route is the Kesselgraben Route. It takes you through the winter landscape and offers views of Lackenhof town centre and its parish church. For those interested in learning to ski: at the Ötscher Children’s Land, children and beginners can safely and playfully take their first steps on skis. It operates seasonally.

Archery and Insights into the History of Craftsmanship

The Ă–tscher 3D Archery Course in Lackenhof features more than 50 3D targets across four shorter loops. Equipment can be hired at the entrance, by the Ă–tscher Schirmbar at the valley station of the GroĂźer Ă–tscher double chairlift. This includes bows, arrows with a quiver, and arm and finger guards. Rental arrangements may vary by season; check the current conditions in advance.

The Karl Teufel Private Museum displays tools and equipment used in carpentry and joinery. These include tools that were also used by the lumberjacks of earlier times. A look at these tools complements the outdoor activities with an insight into craftsmanship and its historical uses.

The Ötscher dripstone cave lies in the Ötscher-Tormäuer Nature Park, in the wider area around Lackenhof. Its features include stalagmites and stalactites; access is seasonal. It is a natural and cultural attraction in the surrounding area, distinct from the trails and activities in the village itself.
