Discover Klamm: Semmering Railway, castle ruins and hiking trails
Accommodation in Klamm
There are three main themes to explore on a trip to Klamm: the Semmering Railway, hiking and local history. These include the railway line’s third section, the Lower Austrian railway hiking trail, the parish and the castle ruins. When choosing a hotel for your stay, thinking about what interests you most may help: are you especially interested in the historic railway, would you like to explore on foot, or would you like to combine both? Klamm brings together World Heritage, hiking options and local history.
The Semmering Railway as a World Heritage Site
The Semmering Railway was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998. Its third section runs through dense forest to Klamm-Schottwien station. After passing through the Klamm Tunnel, the railway reaches the Adlitzgraben. The UNESCO listing recognises the railway as a World Heritage Site; the sequence of dense forest, the Klamm Tunnel and the Adlitzgraben also brings the specific route to life. This means you can explore Klamm’s railway theme both through its cultural and historical significance and through the landscape along the route.
Hiking the railway trail and the Klamm loop
The Lower Austrian railway hiking trail runs via Breitenstein and the Weinzettlhöhe to Klamm station. The Breitenstein–Klamm section takes about two hours, giving you a specific timeframe for planning your day. You can break your hike on the railway trail at Klamm-Schottwien; from there, you can take a train back to Semmering. This return journey is an option if you would like to shorten your hike. Klamm station is one of the RUFbus stops on the Breitenstein–Klamm panoramic route. Check the current service if you plan to include a journey in your itinerary.
The short Klamm loop is easy to manage, even with children. It passes Mostbauern Rumpler, where specialities made from their own produce invite you to stop and enjoy a break. Compared with the Breitenstein–Klamm section, it offers a different focus: the short loop is all about an easy outing with children and local food, while the railway trail section takes about two hours.
Parish and parish church
Klamm Parish was first mentioned in a document in 1146 and is the oldest parish in the Semmering region. The parish church was enlarged and rebuilt in the 15th and 16th centuries. These refer to two different periods: the first documented mention relates to the parish, while the later centuries relate to the church’s building history. This makes it possible to consider the parish’s long history separately from the church’s later architectural development.
Castle ruins and landscape
Klamm Castle Ruins lie near the Semmering Railway station of the same name and stand on a broad rocky outcrop called Heubachkogel. From the ruins, sheer rock faces plunge 125 m into the wide gorge of the Adlitzgraben. The castle’s history is thus linked to specific landscape features: Heubachkogel is the rocky outcrop, and the Adlitzgraben is the gorge. The ruins’ location near the station connects them with the Semmering Railway; the outcrop and gorge define the area’s topography.
