Zeiselberg: Wine Culture, Cellar Lane and Bründl Sites
Accommodation in Zeiselberg
when looking for a hotel in Zeiselberg, you can distinguish between the main themes: the wine culture of Gobelsburg-Zeiselberg, the Gobelsburg cellar lane towards Zeiselberg, as well as historic Bründl sites and the observation tower on Gobelsberg. The following destinations combine cultural history with opportunities for walking or cycling.
Winegrowing history and cellars
The history of winegrowing goes back a long way. The oldest parts of the cellars at Schloss Gobelsburg date back to the 11th-century castle complex. Zwettl Abbey already owned vineyards in Gobelsburg in the 12th century; in 1740, it developed Schloss Gobelsburg into a wine estate. The history of the area therefore brings together several stages: early cellar sections, vineyard ownership and the estate’s later development into a wine estate.
Schloss Gobelsburg offers cellar tours followed by a tasting of five wines. Tours take place on Fridays at 2 p.m. and Saturdays at 11 a.m., last 2.5 hours and cost €34. Advance registration is essential. Individual tours may occasionally be cancelled due to other events. Before making plans, check the dates, price, registration requirements and availability.
The wine tradition in Gobelsburg-Zeiselberg also has a family history: Josef Burger and his family have run the winery there since 1992; his family’s winegrowing tradition dates back to 1812. The wines differ in color and production method. The winery produces fruity, crisp white wines. Depending on the variety, red wines are aged in large oak casks or small barrique barrels. This information offers an insight into local wine production without implying that the family history itself includes a tasting.
Exploring on foot or by bike
The extensive Gobelsburg cellar lane can be explored on foot or by bicycle in the direction of Zeiselberg. This gives you two ways to include the same cellar lane in your plans. One route also leads into the district of Zeiselberg and on to the restored remains of the pilgrimage chapel “Maria Bründl.”
Another named circular walk is the Winzerdorfweg No. 63, which leads from Langenlois to Gobelsburg. On this route, turn right at the end of the cellar lane by the Burger winery. The difference between the two route options is simple: the cellar lane can be explored on foot or by bike towards Zeiselberg, while the Winzerdorfweg is described as a circular walk.
Bründl sites and scenic views
The Frauen-Bründl was first mentioned in a document in 1660 and was regarded by pilgrims as a sacred spring. It is distinct from the Marien-Bründl at the entrance to Gobelsburg when arriving from Langenlois: there, the remains of a former chapel are joined by a spring and a resting place.
For views of the wider landscape, the observation tower on Gobelsberg offers a panorama stretching from the Tulln Basin across the Danube Valley to the foothills of the Alps. Together with the historic sites and wine culture, it gives you a varied picture of the destinations around Zeiselberg.
