In Ernstbrunn, hiking routes, wildlife watching and cultural history are different themes to consider when planning your trip. Think about whether you would like to spend most of your time outdoors, explore historic sites or combine both. The specific activities vary considerably: from a marked circular hike to a guided tour offering insights into wolf research, as well as exhibitions and archaeological remains.

Hiking, cycling and getting around

The Kalkstein-Runde is an easy circular hike covering 13.02 kilometres. The starting and finishing point is Ernstbrunn’s main square. If you would rather follow a route with a named destination, the Ernsti children’s adventure trail starts at Ernstbrunn railway station and leads to the children’s railway. The different starting and finishing points make it easy to distinguish between these two hiking options when planning your trip.

For mountain biking, the Mountainbike Arena Leiser Berge near Ernstbrunn includes several named trails, including Oberleis Klassik, Leiser Hügeltour and Wildpark Wolfsrunde. The Weinvierteldraisine route runs from Ernstbrunn to Asparn an der Zaya. The section from Ernstbrunn to Grafensulz climbs gently. It offers views of the Weinviertel’s rolling countryside, before the descent leads into the Zayatal valley. This means you can consider the circular hike, mountain bike trails and draisine route as different ways of getting around.

At Ernstbrunn Wildlife Park, you can observe red deer, fallow deer, sika deer and mouflons in walk-through enclosures. There is also a playground by Ziegelofenteich pond in the wildlife park. The Wolf Science Center’s 1.5-hour adventure tour offers a different perspective on animals, with insights into its research and daily work with wolves and dogs. The highlight is a short presentation featuring a wolf, where you can see people and animals in action.

Museum, architectural history and historic sites

The Ernstbrunn Local History Museum traces the history of the Ernstbrunn area. The tour includes finds from prehistoric times, the Middle Ages, the past two centuries and the present day. There is also a room dedicated to art and culture, with temporary exhibitions; some works are on permanent display. The museum thus combines a broad historical overview with both changing and permanent art exhibits.

Ernstbrunn Castle also offers a glimpse into architectural history: the building has four romantic inner courtyards, and construction of the entire complex spanned the 11th to the 18th century. Archaeological finds on Oberleiser Berg date back to prehistoric times. During the Iron Age, from around 800 to 15 BC, an important Celtic hilltop settlement developed there, serving as a place to live and a trading centre.

The Maria Oberleis pilgrimage church was built around 1050 and lies on the Weinviertel Way of St. James. This connects a historic building with a specific pilgrimage route. HeilbrĂĽndl in BrĂĽndl offers another link to the past: it was first mentioned in written records in 1432, when it was already used for treatments. The small MarienbrĂĽndl Chapel was built in 1837 in memory of the healing spring.

Regional market

The Simonsfeld farmers’ market is a weekly market for local direct sales. Its offerings include regional vegetables, wine, bread and pastries, as well as schnapps and honey. Products from sheep, goats and pigs round out the selection; regional handicrafts are also available. When planning your trip, you can therefore include a market featuring regional food and crafts alongside outdoor activities and cultural history.
