Kaumberg: Araburg Castle, Hiking Trails and Via Sacra
Accommodation in Kaumberg
Kaumberg combines hiking destinations and historic buildings with a distinctive landscape. The Triesting River rises here, and the contrast between the Vienna Woods region with its gentle hills and the foothills of the Alps is particularly striking. This gives you some specific themes to consider when planning your trip: Araburg Castle, routes on foot or by bike, and the Via Sacra. When choosing a hotel, you can decide whether to focus mainly on hiking, explore the area’s history or plan a pilgrimage.
Araburg Castle and Historic Buildings
Araburg Castle is a castle ruin built in the 12th century, at an elevation of almost 800 metres. It is considered the highest-altitude castle ruin in Lower Austria. The 27-metre-high keep offers a view of the hilly foothills of the Alps. Araburg Castle can be reached from the centre of Kaumberg in about 90 minutes on foot. Interactive guided tours bring the castle’s history and life in the 13th and 14th centuries to life.
The Araburgstüberl is housed within the walls of Araburg Castle. It serves freshly cooked meals every day and offers regional products. St. Michael’s Parish Church provides a different historical note: it dates from the 12th century and was built in the Gothic style. As a former fortified church, it is partly surrounded by a defensive wall. In Kaumberg, the hilltop castle and a church that once served a defensive purpose stand side by side as distinct reminders of the town’s history.
Hiking in and around Kaumberg
The Froschweg is a medium-length hiking route. It starts in Kaumberg and explores the cultural landscape east of the town in a clockwise direction. Further route details are available for the Hirschweg: this moderately difficult hike starts at the main square, is 9.44 kilometres long and takes about three hours. It follows scenic routes across meadows and, in places, through patches of woodland. Along the way, you can see, among other things, the Eisernes Tor, Schneeberg and Ă–tscher. As route conditions can change, check them before setting out on your hike.
Another route leads from Kaumberg to Hocheck (1,037 m), the easternmost peak over 1,000 metres in the Lower Austrian foothills of the Alps. The hikes therefore have different features: the Froschweg focuses on the cultural landscape east of Kaumberg, while the Hirschweg is described in terms of difficulty, distance and approximate duration.
Via Sacra and Cycling Routes
The Via Sacra also leads to Kaumberg: its second stage runs from Heiligenkreuz via Altenmarkt to Kaumberg. A bus connection makes it possible to hike sections as day trips. If you want to coordinate your stage plans with the bus, check the timetables in advance. This is separate from the Kaumberg foot pilgrimage to Mariazell, which takes place every year in July.
There are also specific options for cycling trips. Marked cycling routes connect Kaumberg with Schöpfel, and the Triesting-Gölsental cycle path also passes through the town. These refer to two different routes: a cycling connection to Schöpfel and a cycle path that passes through Kaumberg.
Winter Activities
Brandlwiese has a small ski area with a platter lift. If you are planning a winter visit, check the winter facilities before you travel. This allows you to consider this seasonal option alongside hiking, cycling and cultural experiences when planning your trip.
