Eggenburg: Culture, City Wall and Cycling Routes

Eggenburg combines cultural history with walking paths and cycling tours. When planning a stay, you can choose between museum visits, a walk along the medieval city wall and tours through the surrounding area. The different themes can help you decide which aspects of the town you would like to explore further.

Museums and the Town’s History

The Krahuletz Museum features extensive geological, palaeontological and archaeological collections on the natural and cultural history of north-western Lower Austria. In a small park in front of the museum, 22 stone pillars represent the rocks of the Waldviertel. Here, you can explore both the region’s natural history and evidence of its human past. The museum is open from 1 April to 30 November, Tuesday to Sunday and on public holidays, from 10 am to 4 pm. Check the schedule before your arrival.

The Nostalgiewelt offers a different way to explore the past: it displays historic jukeboxes, some of which can be played, as well as pinball machines and old amusement machines. The collection brings together musical automata and entertainment technology, setting it apart from the natural and cultural history themes of the Krahuletz Museum. The Gilli Mill also tells a story of change: the 460-year-old mill was converted from a grain mill into an oil mill. The collection of the Priv. unif. Bürgerkorps is housed in the 600-year-old Kanzlerturm.

City Wall and Guided Tours

The city wall circular route is a walking path around and through the medieval town, leading to its main sights. You can climb the city wall at two points: by the monastery church and at the Kanzlerturm. If you are visiting outside the main season, check locally whether these access points are open. On guided town tours, guides dressed in medieval clothing lead visitors through Eggenburg. The circular route and guided tours therefore offer different ways to explore the town: one follows a route, while the other takes you through town with a guide.

Landscape and Cycling Tours

The landscape also bears traces of how it was formed. The “Stone & Wine” trail passes through a sunken lane lined with cellars dating from the 19th century. These cellars are dug into Ice Age loess, which the wind carried to the eastern side of the hilltop. At Grafenberg, near Eggenburg, the Kogelsteine display weathering forms typical of granite, known as spheroidal weathering. The Fehhaube is a distinctive rock formation near Stoitzendorf.

Two cycling options of different difficulty levels are worth considering: the “Riesling” Wine Cycle Route is a moderately difficult day tour of about 45 kilometres. This circular tour starts in medieval Eggenburg and passes through numerous villages with historic sights. Challenging Cycle Route 7, by contrast, starts at Eggenburg railway station and crosses the Weinviertel from west to east. When choosing, you can weigh the approximate distance and circular route of one tour against the higher difficulty level and west-to-east direction of the other. No route length is given here for Route 7.
