Winkl: Cultural History and Activities in Sankt Jakob im Rosental
Accommodation in Winkl
Winkl’s cultural history is connected with the singers of the Catholic Slovenian Educational Association Kot: its most active singers came from Winkl, which is why the association was originally named after the village. The former Winkl im Rosental stop is also part of the village’s history; it remained in operation until 15 December 2019. If you would like to travel by train today, check the connections for your travel date in advance.
The Cultural History of Winkl and Sankt Jakob
The musical history of Sankt Jakob im Rosental is also connected with Kot: Rožica, the first men’s choir in Sankt Jakob, was founded there in 1899. The Catholic Slovenian Educational Association Kot began its activities in early 1903. As part of its educational and cultural work, the association established a library; during the interwar period, it staged up to four plays a year. Singing, educational work and theatre thus represent different facets of the area’s historical cultural life.
Hiking Trails and Destinations in Sankt Jakob im Rosental
There are many well-marked hiking trails in Sankt Jakob im Rosental. One specific destination is the historic Rasburg castle ruins high above the valley: the Rasburg Trail starts at the Ritter playground, follows an easy forest track through dense mountain woodland and leads from Sankt Jakob im Rosental to the ruins. If you would like to make a castle ruin your destination for an outing, this route offers a named starting point and a stretch through the forest.
Another route leads to the Bertahütte mountain hut. Following the E1 connection of the Julius Kugy Three-Country Trail, it runs from the Sankt Jakob im Rosental bus stop via St Ursula’s Church in Schlatten, the daffodil meadow and the Roßalm, southeast of the Bertahütte. The destinations are clearly distinct: you can choose between the Rasburg castle ruins and the route to the Bertahütte.
Seasons, the Lake and Cycling
There is more to explore on foot than individual routes: Sankt Jakob im Rosental also offers winter hiking trails and cross-country ski tracks. At Fini-Planai, beginners can ski, and there is a small drag lift. This makes it possible to distinguish between hiking, winter hiking, cross-country skiing and downhill skiing, rather than treating them as a single type of outdoor activity.
Sankt Jakob im Rosental lies between the Karawanken mountain range and the Drau Reservoir. The lake stretches for about twelve kilometres and is used for surfing and rowing. The difference matters when choosing an activity: water sports take centre stage at the reservoir, while the hiking trails lead to destinations on foot.
Cycling is another distinct focus. The 364-kilometre Drau Cycle Path passes through tranquil floodplain landscapes in the Sankt Jakob im Rosental area. Another cycling option associated with Sankt Jakob im Rosental is the Drau Cycle Path R1, designated a five-star quality cycle route. The cycle route and water activities appeal to different interests: floodplain landscapes on the one hand, and surfing and rowing on the reservoir on the other.
