Discover Villach: Culture, Cycling and Water
Accommodation in Villach
Villach offers a range of options for your stay: architectural and cultural history, a multimedia tour through the old town, and activities on the water and by bike. The Villach Alpine Road, which leads from Villach to Dobratsch Nature Park, is another highlight. If you’re looking for a hotel in Villach, you can first consider which part of your travel plans you’d like to focus on: museums and historical topics, a water-based experience, cycling or the Villach Alpine Road.
City History and Culture
At 94 metres tall, the Villach city parish tower is the tallest church tower in Carinthia. The Villacher Burg exhibition space, located in the former Bamberg city palace in Villach, presents archaeological and architectural history finds, as well as research findings.
The Museum of the City of Villach features a redesigned permanent archaeological exhibition on the history of the region, from the Neolithic period to the Middle Ages. It spans a broad period of time, and its presentation may continue to evolve. The Schausammlung PLUS displays stone monuments in the courtyard and lapidarium, including an especially extensive collection from Roman times. The monuments were found in many places in and around Villach.
An important legal monument is the pillory, dating from the 15th century, which was recovered in 1959 during construction of the city bridge.
Tours, Water and Cycling
City Tour Villach is a multimedia walking tour through the old town. Short films share the city’s history, anecdotes and historical background. The format differs from the museum content: short films accompany the tour, while the collections focus on archaeological and architectural history topics.
Near Villach, in Warmbad Villach, you’ll find the Maibachl thermal spring. Two natural pools hold its water, which is 28 degrees Celsius, and invite you to swim and relax. The spring’s water flow is seasonal, so bear this in mind when planning.
Along the Drau Paddling Trail, kayakers and stand-up paddleboarders can dock at FreizeitBASE in the heart of Villach. There are also two different things to note for cyclists: Villach has a fully interconnected cycle network and is part of the long-distance Ciclovia Alpe Adria cycle route. One describes the cycle network in Villach; the other refers to its connection to a long-distance route.
Plan Routes and Activities
The Villach Alpine Road runs 16.5 kilometres from Villach up to Dobratsch Nature Park. It climbs around 1,200 metres in elevation over seven hairpin bends. Check the road’s current access conditions before setting off, as these may change.
The Villach Krimi-Trail, “Die Lei-Lei Leiche”, can be played at any time after purchase, without booking a time slot; you can start right away or later. Check the details before your trip. The Maibachl’s water flow is seasonal, while you can start the Krimi-Trail at any time after purchase.
