Sankt Lambrecht combines a branch church that is a listed monument (as of 15 June 2024) with several cycling and pilgrimage routes that reach or pass through the village, or use the church as a landmark. Nearby attractions such as the Keltenwelt Frög and destinations in Rosegg round out a visit to the village. This lets you combine cultural history, route itineraries and excursions in the region.

Church and history

The Catholic branch church of St. Augustine in Sankt Lambrecht is a listed monument (as of 15 June 2024). Architecturally, it is a simple building with a semicircular choir and a wooden roof turret topped by a pointed gable roof. Its furnishings include a modest, Baroque-inspired interior and a wooden west gallery. According to an inscription on the west wall, the church was devastated during the Napoleonic Wars in 1813, then thoroughly restored and embellished in 1856. After a fire in 1883, it had to be renovated again in 1888.

Nearby, a network of paths at the Keltenwelt Frög leads through burial grounds to one of the largest princely tombs. It has been converted into a display tomb. The site also presents the unique-in-Europe discovery of an ornate lead hearse. The Keltenwelt shows the way of life, cult, worldview and social structure of the ancestors. The focus is on original pieces of jewellery from the woman’s grave (burial mound 120).

Cycling and pilgrimage routes

After Emmersdorf, the Faaker See Radweg–Rosental reaches Sankt Lambrecht at kilometre 9.0; the branch church of St. Augustine is one of the route’s places of worship. The route is designated as a 27.60-kilometre mountain bike route. One stage of the Drau Cycle Path runs from Emmersdorf through Sankt Lambrecht to Selpritsch. The Cammino Celeste also passes through the village; the 19th-century branch church of St. Augustine serves as a local landmark.

The routes offer different reference points: on the Faaker See Radweg–Rosental, you can note the kilometre marker and total length, while on the Drau Cycle Path, you can follow the sequence of stage destinations. The Marienpilgerweg continues to Selpritsch; after about 200 metres, the path branches off to the branch church of St. Augustine in Sankt Lambrecht. From there, the route runs via Emmersdorf to Bergl and along the Wudmather Weg to the R1 cycle path. Check route details and local signage before setting off.

Excursions nearby

Rosegg lies in the Upper Rosental between Lake Faak, Lake Wörthersee and Lake Keutschach. Rosegg Animal Park offers 30 spacious hectares for walking; most paths are suitable for strollers. More than 300 animals live on the grounds, and many roam freely. You can walk among historic walls around the historic castle hill and observe the animals.

The Rosegg Labyrinth offers something different: more than 3,000 hornbeams form a one-kilometre-long hedge over 2,400 square metres. The two attractions therefore differ in the figures used to describe them: the labyrinth is defined by the length of its hedge, while the animal park is described by its spacious area.
