Greifenburg is located in the Upper Drau Valley. Different themes come together when planning your trip: a gorge trail shaped over thousands of years, a bathing lake, alpine hikes, air sports and historic buildings.

Gorge and bathing lake

The Gnoppnitzbach water adventure trail leads through a gorge shaped by ice, water, wind and weather over thousands of years. The landscape tells the story of a long process of natural change. When planning your walk, bear in mind that trail conditions may vary.

Greifenburg bathing lake covers four hectares and has a spacious sunbathing lawn. Facilities include a diving tower, a water slide, a trampoline, a bocce court and a playground. No seasonal operating period is specified for these facilities, so do not plan your visit on the assumption that they are available year-round.

Hikes to Waisacher Alm and Reißkofel

The E.T. Compton Hut serves as a starting point for climbing Reißkofel. Alpine conditions are part of planning this tour, as they can vary. There are two described walking routes to Waisacher Alm: from Bruggen via hiking trail G5, or from the Gamberger snack station. The walking time for both routes is approximately 2 to 2.5 hours; this is an approximate guide, and trail conditions can also change.

These destinations offer different planning options: you can allow for an approximate walking time to Waisacher Alm, while the E.T. Compton Hut serves as a starting point for climbing Reißkofel. Take the specific tour and its conditions into account when planning your day.

More leisure activities

Greifenburg climbing park has a high ropes course. Cycling along the Drau is another leisure activity in Greifenburg. Canyoning is possible amid imposing rock formations and in crystal-clear water. These activities differ in nature, ranging from moving along ropes to a bike ride and an activity in the water.

There are also specific points of reference for air sports. Shuttle buses take hang-glider and paraglider pilots to the launch sites on Emberger Alm. The air sports landing field is near Greifenburg bathing lake, at Fliegercamp Greifenburg.

Castle and parish church

The existence of Greifenburg Castle is documented in the Carinthian Provincial Archives for the first half of the 12th century. A document from 1166 names the castle lords of the time not only by their first names, but also by the name of their castle: “de Grifenberc”. Greifenburg Castle is privately owned, has been carefully restored and can be rented for parties, celebrations, and art, cultural and informational events. If you are planning a specific event, please check availability in advance.

Greifenburg Parish Church is a Late Gothic structure. It was completed in 1521 and given a Baroque makeover around 1700; the master builder was Lorenz Rieder. Together with the history of the castle, the church offers insight into different periods of Greifenburg’s history. For your trip, you can choose between hikes with specific route and time details and a cultural history focus on the castle and its architecture.
