Baldramsdorf lies at the foot of Goldeck. When planning your trip, you can choose between cultural history, church art, and seasonal mountain activities as different areas of focus. Tailor your choices to whether you are mainly interested in Ortenburg and traditional crafts, historic church art, or trails and peaks.

Ortenburg and Handicrafts

Ortenburg Castle was completed in 1140 on a rocky outcrop east of Baldramsdorf, at an altitude of 740 m. It was once the largest castle in Carinthia. The castle ruins offer a view of the valley.

The 1st Carinthian Handicrafts Museum, located in Ortenburg Castle (“Paternschloß”) in Unterhaus, Baldramsdorf, presents the history of traditional crafts and trades. The exhibition covers around 700 m²: more than 40 crafts and trades are presented in over 30 workshops or departments. The workshop displays are modeled on historical examples. Pictures and personal accounts, advice from craftspeople, photographs, diagrams, panels, and master craftsman certificates convey the character of the workshops.

Church Art from Different Periods

Baldramsdorf parish church is a representative late Gothic church building; according to the inscription, it was elaborately vaulted in 1522 by master builder Laurenz Rieder. The freestanding west tower has late Gothic lower stories; its upper story and spire date from 1885. In the two-aisled hall, an elaborate net-rib vault spans two octagonal pillars and wall pillars. The north choir has a net-rib vault, while the south choir has a star-rib vault.

Other churches and chapels also preserve a variety of artworks and designs. The Baldramsdorf Lenten veil is dated 1555 and comprises 39 picture panels. The chapel on Lampersberg has a flat ceiling with colorful stenciled paintings and inscriptions from the early 16th century. The branch church in Gendorf contains a statuette of Saint Nicholas from the mid-15th century; the branch church in Rosenheim features depictions of the Holy Trinity.

Goldeck, Trails, and Seasonal Activities

Goldeck, at 2,142 m high, can be reached by gondola lift. In summer, there are opportunities for hiking; in winter, for skiing and snowboarding. The “Talbahn Goldeck” circulating lift takes visitors directly to the reservoir in the Goldeck hiking area. Check the lift’s seasonal operating conditions before your trip.

The Goldeck 5G Challenge is a one-day hike over five peaks: Goldeck, Martennock, Staff, Eckwand, and Latschur. The 1.2 km forest and bee nature trail leads from Unterhaus in the direction of Ortenburg. This offers a contrast between a day hike over several peaks and a trail with a stated distance.

Goldeck Hut can be reached on foot from the valley station of the Goldeckbahn in Schwaig, in the municipality of Baldramsdorf; conditions on the mountain can vary. Cycling on the Drau Cycle Path is also among the recreational activities associated with Baldramsdorf.
