When the municipal trail list was checked on 12 August 2026, the Häusleralm hut tour was listed from the sports ground in Mallnitz via Dlaskawald and Lemperleboden to the Häusleralm; mowing work was noted that day. When the municipal trail list was checked on 14 August 2026, the Mallnitz Tauern Roman road was listed from the Jamnigalm car park via Wirtriegel, Laschgwald and Glitschboden to the Tauern Cross, and was marked as open that day. Destinations range from a hut and an alpine pasture to Lassach and a mountain pass, as well as the Tauern Cross; the intermediate stops provide further route details.
Historical Traces
The historic Roman road across the Hohe Tauern to Böckstein follows ancient trade routes, passes Lake Tauern and connects natural and cultural landscapes. Under Roman rule, roads suitable for wheeled vehicles were built across the Korntauern and the Mallnitzer Tauern; their remains can still be clearly seen in the terrain today. A Celtic silver coin found at the Mallnitzer Tauern attests to the presence of the Celts on Mallnitz soil. The Roman road remains and the Celtic coin represent different historical connections: one is a constructed transport route, the other a specific archaeological find.
Mallnitz Christ the King Church was built in 1974/75 to the plans of architect DI Kurt Miessler, under parish priest Jakob Santer.
Nature Exhibits at BIOS
At the BIOS National Park Centre Mallnitz, the “univerzoom nationalpark” exhibition features numerous interactive stations on landslides, wilderness and a diverse range of wildlife. The exhibition is complemented by interactive guided tours. Group tours and group workshops are available only by prior arrangement; the workshops take place in the “rangerlabs” research workshops.
Getting Here and Your Stay
Mallnitz-Obervellach ICE railway station is right at the entrance to the town. The hiking bus connects the main starting points in the Seebachtal and Tauerntal valleys and the surrounding area; in the 2026 summer season, it runs daily. Timetables and transport details may change with the seasons, so check your connection before travelling and before setting out on a hike. The station and hiking bus play different roles in planning: the station is at the entrance to the town, while the bus connects trailheads in the valleys and surrounding area.
Access to the Tauernbad Mallnitz swimming pool and sauna was made step-free and accessible to all guests after renovation work in autumn 2017. If step-free access to the pool and sauna is important when choosing where to stay, this information provides a specific point of reference.
