Kleindiex is one of the localities in the municipality of Ruden. Ruden is considered a sunny, peaceful and wooded area. In and near Kleindiex, different travel interests have specific points of interest: cycling routes, the landscape around Lippekogel, and the region’s architectural and pilgrimage history. When planning, it is worth distinguishing the Drau Cycle Route that passes through Kleindiex from a described mountain bike loop, and keeping the changing pilgrimage dates in mind.

A municipal ordinance issued in August 2025 establishes a 30 km/h zone in the built-up area of Kleindiex. A 30 km/h speed limit applies in both directions on the municipal road between Kleindiex and Kraßnitz.

Landscape around Lippekogel

Lippekogel near Kleindiex is part of the southernmost section of the Wallersberg hill country. It is formed, among other things, from Silurian greywacke sandstone and quartzite. The last moraines pushed forward by the Drau Glacier were also deposited at Lippekogel. This brings two geological perspectives together: the hill’s rock types and deposits from a later glacial period. A moraine is material transported and deposited by a glacier; the term explains why the landscape can be understood both through its rocks and through the effects of ice.

Cycling through Kleindiex

The South Carinthia R1 Drau Cycle Route passes through Kleindiex between St. Lorenzen and Ruden. In Ruden, the Drau Cycle Path then runs for about four kilometres along the Lavamünder Bundesstraße. This distance refers to the subsequent section, not the entire route. Road conditions can change, so check them before setting out.

A tour plan from 2023 describes a different type of route: an easy mountain bike loop starting and ending in Griffen and passing through Ruden, Kleindiex and St. Peter/W. The tour is listed as approximately 25 kilometres long, with 200 metres of elevation gain. Here, the R1 is described as a route between St. Lorenzen and Ruden, while the mountain bike route forms a loop starting and ending in Griffen. The two routes therefore differ both in their course and in their scope: the approximate distance and elevation gain apply to the described mountain bike loop.

Architecture and pilgrimage in the surrounding area

Cultural and historical points of interest near Kleindiex include Lippitzbach Castle and the Drau Bridge at Lippitzbach. Lippitzbach Castle is a grand manor house dating from the early 19th century, with a historic chapel extension. The Drau Bridge is one of the most significant surviving engineering structures by the renowned Viennese bridge-building company Ignaz Gridl. The two buildings represent different aspects of cultural heritage: the castle is defined by its manor-house design and chapel extension, while the bridge is notable for its engineering significance.

Nearby, the Jauntal Three-Mountain Pilgrimage Run begins with a midnight mass at the pilgrimage church on Lisnaberg. This traditional, recurring pilgrimage run leads from Lisnaberg through Dobrowa to Lippitzbach. Its dates vary from year to year, and the organisation of the route can also change each year. If the run is important to your travel plans, check the dates in advance.
