Rattersdorf combines a long pilgrimage tradition with a complex church building and routes for different interests. The pilgrimage church is set in the hilly landscape of Central Burgenland, among forests and meadows. This offers several different points of focus for planning your visit: the church’s architectural and pilgrimage history, a circular hike, a pilgrimage route or a cross-border cycling tour.

Rattersdorf Pilgrimage Church: Architectural History and Devotion

The Rattersdorf Pilgrimage Church is a group of buildings formed by two churches growing together. A defensive wall surrounds the complex, whose parts came together between the 13th and 17th centuries. The oldest part is a chapel on the lower level of the tower, dating from the 13th century. This building therefore brings together several periods.

The religious history of the town also goes back a long way: the parish was founded around 1300, and pilgrimage to Rattersdorf began around the same time. The Rattersdorf devotional image of Maria Lactans is a copy of the votive image from 1644. Another local feature is the “Bründl”, a holy spring on the east side of the church, on the site of the former cemetery. Together, these details give the pilgrimage church a specific historical and religious context.

Pilgrimage Dates and Routes

Rattersdorf has three main pilgrimage days: the Sunday after 2 July, 15 August and 8 September. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these dates, check the details locally in advance.

The routes also differ in their course and purpose. The “alpannonia” circular hike connects Rattersdorf via Siebenbründl and the Althaus observation tower on Zeigerberg with Kőszeg, then returns to Rattersdorf. The Mária Út turns left in Rattersdorf before the church and continues to the border. In the Írottkő-Geschriebenstein Nature Park, it runs from Rattersdorf towards Kőszeg.

For cyclists, the cross-border MTB-Geschriebenstein route passes through Rattersdorf. This means there are different types of routes to choose from: the alpannonia circular hike returns to Rattersdorf, the Mária Út continues towards the border or Kőszeg, and the MTB route passes through the town. When planning, you can therefore choose between a circular hike, a pilgrimage route and a cycling route without needing to assume a specific walking or cycling time.

Landscape and Getting There

The hilly surroundings, with forests and meadows, are part of the landscape around the pilgrimage church. Very old sweet chestnut trees are also considered characteristic of Rattersdorf. If you are interested in the connection between nature and cultural heritage, you will find natural features alongside the church that help shape a stay in the region.

The Burgenland public transport network includes the “Rattersdorf, Bahnhofstraße” stop. Check the timetable for departures and connections on your travel date. Hungarian pilgrims travelling on foot to Mariazell stop in Rattersdorf; this pilgrimage tradition is also a distinctive part of the town’s connection with walking routes and pilgrimage.
