Gaas offers several different points of interest to help you plan your trip: churches and chapels with a long history, the Gaas–Maria Weinberg circular trail and winegrowing in the Pinkatal valley. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Gaas, you can make your choice based on whether you want to focus primarily on the historic sites, the route to Maria Weinberg or winegrowing.

Church Architecture and History in Gaas

The parish and pilgrimage church of the Assumption of Mary in Gaas was built in 1155 and extended and remodeled in 1524. Romanesque architectural elements from a former castle chapel have been discovered repeatedly during renovation work. They can be linked to Kertes Castle, which was first mentioned in 1221. The church thus brings together different historical periods: its early foundation, the 16th-century remodeling and architectural features that point to a possible connection with the former castle chapel.

Another stop in the village center is the listed Catholic branch church of St. Anne. It was built as a chapel in 1739 and extended in 1892. The building has a single nave, a recessed apse and a projecting eastern tower with an onion dome. These features give the church a different architectural profile from the parish and pilgrimage church. The village church of St. Anne is also associated with the construction dates 1739 and 1892.

Chapels and Memorial Sites in Maria Weinberg

In Maria Weinberg, the cemetery chapel is an old charnel house dating from the 14th century. The listed Gaas-Maria Weinberg cemetery is also home to the Candle Chapel. Its altar features a 17th-century Calvary group; beneath the chapel is a bone chamber. The war memorial in the cemetery commemorates those who fell in the First and Second World Wars. It was made in Heinrich Czerny’s workshop in Vienna and is located in the immediate vicinity of the Maria Weinberg parish and pilgrimage church and the Candle Chapel.

The smaller chapels also differ considerably from one another. The Triangular Chapel stands on the farm track between Gaas and Maria Weinberg and has a very rare triangular shape. Parish priest Mag. Karl Schlögl blessed it on June 10, 2012. There are three chapels in total on the ascent via the Loderberg to the Maria Weinberg pilgrimage church.

Circular Trail and Winegrowing

The Gaas–Maria Weinberg circular trail begins in the center of Gaas and is about 7.80 km long. Along the way, it passes the listed family chapel in Gaas-Weinberg. The approximate route length can help with planning how much time to allow; check the route information locally for possible changes. A pasture in the village of Gaas lies within the Weinidylle Nature Park and adds a landscape-related dimension to the historical focus.

Grosz Winery is located among the vineyards on the Weinberg hill in the village of Gaas in the Pinkatal valley. Now in its third generation, the winery farms about seven hectares of vineyards. Its range of grape varieties includes Welschriesling, Pinot Blanc, Uhudler, Zweigelt, Merlot, Blaufränkisch and Gewürztraminer Auslese. A tasting of five wines is free of charge and available year-round by telephone appointment. Arrange your visit by phone before you arrive.

These places offer a range of options when deciding what to include in your trip: the churches and memorial sites invite you to compare architectural styles and historical periods; the circular trail connects Gaas with Maria Weinberg and passes a protected family chapel; and the winery adds winegrowing and a tasting by appointment. Choose a hotel in Gaas to suit the stops that matter most to your trip.
