When planning a trip to Wickepin, two different scales come into play: the Albert Facey Heritage Trail, a self-drive route in and around the Wheatbelt town, and attractions and recreational spots in the centre. If you’re looking for a hotel, it helps to decide what you want to focus on during your stay: would you like a longer driving itinerary to be the main event, or would you rather explore Wickepin’s history and local offerings? The themes range from Albert Facey’s life to a play and recreation space for all generations.

Exploring Wickepin by car and on foot

The Albert Facey Heritage Trail is a 55-kilometre self-drive route in and around Wickepin, starting from the town. Allow at least half a day for the drive. Its length and timeframe make the trail a destination in its own right, distinct from a short tour of the town. There is also a walking trail connecting the Wickepin Heritage Precinct, on the north side of the railway line, with the town centre. The 55 kilometres describe the scope of the drive, while half a day is the time to allow; the walking trail, by contrast, connects two named areas of the town. This clearly distinguishes the longer drive from the walking link between parts of Wickepin.

Albert Facey and Wickepin’s history

The Albert Facey Homestead is on Wickepin’s main street and celebrates the life of Albert Facey, author of the bestselling autobiography A Fortunate Life. In 2000, the Homestead was moved from a farm property to Wickepin. The move is a distinct part of the Homestead’s story, alongside its tribute to Facey’s life.

The Wickepin Historical Photo Display depicts the development of the main street from 1909 onwards. It complements the Homestead by offering a different perspective on Wickepin: the Homestead celebrates Albert Facey’s life, while the display focuses on the history of the local main street. The dates refer to different subjects: 1909 marks the start of the main street’s story as depicted, while 2000 is the year the Homestead was moved to Wickepin. Wickepin Railway Station, in Railway Reserve Wickepin, is one of the few surviving railway stations of its kind in the Wheatbelt and adds another regional dimension to the town’s history.

Play and recreation in the centre

If you’d like to include a place to play and relax alongside the historical attractions, Wogolin Recreation Park is another option in central Wickepin. It is a play and recreation space for the community and travellers, designed for all generations. Play options include a slide, a spider swing and a flying fox. There is also a water play area, available particularly in summer; if this is important to you, take its seasonal availability into account when planning. A barbecue is one of the facilities near the park. The park offers a different focus from the historic sites: play and recreation take centre stage rather than biography, main street history or railway heritage.
