Rocky Gully is located on the southern side of the Muir Highway, at the western end of the Shire of Plantagenet, about 68 kilometres from Mount Barker. This location provides an initial geographic orientation; local history and cultural connections offer further ways to explore the destination.

Settlement history and cultural connections

Rocky Gully was established in the 1950s under the War Service Settlement Scheme. Initiated by the Australian Government after the Second World War, the program aimed to expand the area of farmland in the south of Western Australia and resettle former servicemen. Rocky Gully also served as a centre for timber logging and processing. Its founding date places the town within the post-war settlement period; its role as a timber centre adds an economic perspective to this political and agricultural context.

The name Rocky Gully may have come from the rocky nature of a road that crossed a hollow near the present-day town site. The Aboriginal name for the area around Rocky Gully is “Chullurup”, meaning “place of white ants”. Noongar Elders held the area known as Chullurup in deep reverence. The possible road-related origin of the town’s name and the name Chullurup are two distinct connections: one concerns a possible explanation for “Rocky Gully”, while the other refers to the culturally significant area.

A project from 2023 is also part of the local history of remembrance. Former residents and descendants of former servicemen, with support from the Rocky Gully CWA, agreed to establish the First Years Memorial. It was intended to be dedicated to and commemorate the district’s pioneers. The decision focuses on honouring and remembrance, adding a distinct theme of commemoration to the story of the town’s founding.

Places to enjoy and regional orientation

Places to enjoy in Rocky Gully include a playground, a tennis court and the Higgins Park oval. They cater to different interests: play, tennis and the oval as a destination in its own right. If a particular activity is important to your stay, this distinction may help you choose a destination.

At a previous Rocky Gully Revival Show and Shine, around 70 vehicles were displayed on the former school oval at Higgins Park, and around 500 people came through the gates. The figures give an impression of the event and link it to one of the local recreational venues.

In the wider travel region, Rocky Gully provides an opportunity to explore the Nornalup Wilderness. This regional connection adds another travel-planning option to the local perspective: alongside Rocky Gully’s history, culture and places to enjoy, you can also consider exploring the Nornalup Wilderness.
