Discover Carnamah: History, Trails and Nature
Accommodation in Carnamah
The Big Tractor on Yarra Street offers a striking connection to Carnamah’s agricultural past. Other attractions include a local museum collection, memorials, two trails and nature destinations in the surrounding area. When planning your trip, it is helpful to distinguish between places in town, nearby destinations and the wider regional area.
Agriculture and Local History
The Big Tractor is a replica, five times the size of the Chamberlain 40K, the first tractor manufactured in Western Australia in 1949. At 11.5 metres high and 16 metres long, the replica’s scale is easy to appreciate.
The Carnamah Historical Society & Museum at 10 Macpherson Street offers another perspective on the town’s past. Its collection includes objects, photographs and documents relating to Carnamah’s social, domestic, commercial and agricultural history.
The Carnamah Heritage Park is in the heart of Carnamah. It has 18 steel plinths where stainless-steel plaques can be installed to tell family histories. The Carnamah War Memorial offers a different focus: its plaque names people from Carnamah who lost their lives in the First World War. The memorial was funded and erected in 1931 through public donations.
Trails with Different Focuses
The Carnamah Walk Trail is one kilometre long, with winding paths designed for walking or cycling. The Art and Heritage Trail features historic plaques, murals, historical photographs, historic advertisements and artworks. It starts at a mural in front of IGA at 6 Yarra Street and ends at a final plaque in front of 46 Macpherson Street.
The difference between the two trails is clear: the Carnamah Walk Trail offers a short route for exercise, while the Art and Heritage Trail focuses on art and local history.
Nature Nearby and Further Afield
The Carnamah Wildflower Show showcases more than 600 varieties of unique Western Australian wildflowers. The Yarra Yarra Lakes Lookout is about one kilometre west of town. A short gravel access road leads from the Carnamah–Eneabba Road to the lookout, where there is ample room for large vehicles or caravans to turn around. The nearby Yarra Yarra Lakes are remnants of an ancient river system that created a series of shimmering salt lakes.
Macpherson Homestead is one kilometre east of Carnamah on Bunjil-Carnamah Road. It is a place for casual stargazing; toilets are available, and the verandah offers shelter if needed.
Further afield in the region, the Carnamah–Eneabba Road passes through Tathra National Park, east of Eneabba. The park has marked trails where you can observe flora and fauna.
