Ultima is of interest to travellers who want to take local history, railway and agricultural buildings into account when choosing where to stay. The town centre along Dillon Street has been preserved in a condition that differs from Manangatang and other centres along the northern railway lines that have largely disappeared. The history can be traced through individual buildings, the railway grounds, a park and features of the Mallee. If you are looking for hotels for a trip to Ultima, you can use these themes as concrete criteria to decide whether the town matches your interests.

Local History and Historic Buildings

The Ultima Hotel is a large, two-storey brick building that stands prominently at the entrance to the town. The Milk Bar, formerly the Ultima Café, was built in 1925. In the town centre, the concrete water tower on Breen Street is among the oldest surviving structures; it was built around 1908. Another historical landmark is the concrete Bills Memorial Trough for horses, dating from the late 1920s. It was funded by a bequest from George and Annis Bills. The water tower, shop and memorial trough offer different historical reference points in the town centre—from early building history to remembrance and philanthropy.

Railway and Agriculture

A timber-framed goods shed with a gabled roof, fully clad in corrugated iron, stands on the railway grounds. Also there is a linked pair of concrete grain silos, built around 1940. The shed and silos illustrate two sides of the town’s history: the railway and agriculture. The start of settlement is also closely linked to rail transport. It dates to 1 March 1900, when the railway line was extended from Quambatook. This created an important transport link to Bendigo and beyond at the time. For your visit, this provides historical context for understanding the buildings on the railway grounds.

Park, Mallee and Recreation

Lion’s Park features a rotunda, a time capsule and a barbecue area. The former Scout Hall stands right next to the park and has been converted into a museum-like display of agricultural equipment and other memorabilia. One side wall was removed so the display can be viewed and explained from the park. Together, the park and display combine a public place to spend time with a glimpse of agricultural memorabilia.

Ultima lies in the red-dust Mallee. The area’s many trees include belah, box and mallee trees; some are up to 500 years old. The landscape and ancient trees thus add another perspective to the town’s built history. If you would rather plan recreational activities than visits to historic buildings during your stay, there are concrete options for that too: Ultima Golf Club is on the road to Lake Boga and has a nine-hole course with sand scrapes. Check current access before setting out if you would like to play there. A skate park in Memorial Reserve is listed in an entry dated 10 September 2024. If you are making a special trip to visit it, check access in advance.
