The Gurdies: Nature, Trails and Wine
Accommodation in The Gurdies
The Gurdies in Victoria brings together natural areas, local trails and winemaking. When planning a trip, there are several different focuses to consider: a small bushland reserve, seasonal blooms and wildlife watching, specific outdoor activities, and wines made from grapes grown on site. If you’re looking for hotels for a trip to The Gurdies, these topics can help you weigh your interests in nature, activity or winemaking.
Reserves and Access
The Gurdies Reserve is a small reserve characterised by bushland and managed by Bass Coast Shire Council. It lies east of Western Port Bay and borders The Gurdies Nature Conservation Park, which is managed by Parks Victoria. The similarly named The Gurdies Nature Conservation Reserve is a separate area. The Gurdies Reserve is accessible from the end of Hendy Lane to the north and from Woodland Close to the east. You can reach The Gurdies Nature Conservation Reserve via the Bass Highway or Dunbabbin Road in The Gurdies. The access points therefore belong to different reserves.
Walking Paths in the Area
A municipal pathways register from June 2024 lists a footpath along the Bass Highway between Gurdies St Helier Road and Grantville Glen Alvie Road. Another paved footpath follows Gurdies St Helier Road from the Bass Highway to the end of the paved road surface and a bus stop. The two routes have different landmarks: the first has two roads at its ends; for the second, the route along Gurdies St Helier Road, the end of the paved surface and the bus stop are the key reference points. This makes it easier to tell them apart when navigating by the roads mentioned.
Spring, Birdwatching and Trail Use
The Gurdies Nature Conservation Reserve can be reached via the Bass Highway or Dunbabbin Road in The Gurdies. In spring, native orchids and other wildflowers bloom there; the extent of the blooms depends on conditions. Birdwatching is also possible: look out for honeyeaters and rosellas, though sightings vary. Mountain biking is allowed on vehicle-width tracks. Horse riding has its own geographical rule: horses may use the vehicle-width tracks south of the central management track, as well as the central management track itself. The distinctions are specific and useful for planning: blooms are seasonal, bird sightings vary, and cycling and horse riding are permitted on the respective track areas mentioned.
Local Wine Production
The Gurdies Winery is located at 215 Gurdies St Helier Road, The Gurdies, Victoria 3984. It produces varietal and blended wines from eight grape varieties grown on site and uses traditional winemaking methods. A varietal wine focuses on a single grape variety, while a blend combines several varieties. The range therefore includes both single-variety wines and blends.
