Beach and coastal setting

Safety Beach is 2.7 kilometres long and curves around; sheltered by Martha Point, it faces west. Its length, curve and orientation shape this stretch of coast in different ways and give you concrete points of reference for understanding its geography. The Bay Trail adds a distinct waterfront perspective. Its section at Safety Beach runs along the local stretch of the Port Phillip Bay coast; Arthurs Seat is to the south and Mount Martha to the north. These two named landmarks help you identify the location of the trail section, while the curve of the beach provides its own point of reference by the water.

From the Safety Beach Pier, you can see the cliffs and look across to Arthurs Seat. The pier is a viewpoint in its own right, while the Bay Trail runs along the foreshore reserve. This section has few trees, giving it an open landscape. The view from the pier and the route along the foreshore reserve offer two distinct perspectives on Safety Beach. If a striking coastal view and a path along the shore are both important to you when choosing a destination, you can consider these features separately.

Water, pier and beach facilities

Stand-up paddleboarding and canoeing are popular in the clear water of the calm bay at Safety Beach. Water conditions can vary. If you want to include one of these activities in your stay, check local conditions and plan flexibly.

Safety Beach has a boat and jet ski launching facility, parking for boat trailers, and a jetty. There is also parking, including spaces for boat trailers, near the Safety Beach Pier. Three separate toilet blocks are located along the beach; there are also picnic tables and a playground. These features are useful for different plans: the launch facility and jetty help you find your way around for boating and jet skiing, while the toilets, picnic tables and playground describe the other facilities along the beach. If you plan to use these facilities, check local conditions.

Poetry pillars and trail routes

Another distinctive feature of the Bay Trail is its poetry pillars. Walkers can read the eleven rhymes in sequence; the pillars are spaced 200 to 300 metres apart. This creates a sequence along the trail, rather than gathering all the rhymes in one place. The order is part of the experience: as you walk along the trail, you encounter the texts one after another at each pillar. For visitors seeking a literary companion to the coastal landscape, this is a clear difference from simply enjoying the view from the pier.

The last poetry pillar on the Safety Beach Bay Trail stands north of the Martha Cove Underpass, at the start of the clifftop path from Tassells Beach to Pebble Beach. The Bay Trail section from Safety Beach to Dromana also begins at the Martha Cove Underpass and heads south past the Safety Beach Sailing Club. This means that two specific route descriptions are anchored to the same named underpass: one leads to the last poetry pillar and the clifftop path, while the other describes the section heading south to Dromana. When planning, the destinations and directions given for each route will help you identify the right section.
