Neerim: Rail Trail, views and railway history
Accommodation in Neerim
Neerim has two specific points of interest for a stay: the Rokeby to Neerim Rail Trail and Apex Lookout. The trail is part of the original Warragul to Noojee rail line and follows the old line near Neerim. The landscape and railway history are both part of the experience, while the route details make a particular section easy to pin down. Neerim can thus be explored through a walk or ride on the trail, the views from the lookout and the history of the former railway line.
Plan the Rokeby to Neerim Rail Trail
The Rokeby to Neerim Rail Trail can be explored on foot or by bicycle. The section from Neerim South to Apex Lookout is 5 kilometres long and takes about 1.2 hours one way. Distance and time answer different planning questions: the kilometre figure describes the route, while the approximate duration is for one direction. This makes it possible to gauge this particular section in terms of both time and distance. Before your trip, check the latest information on local conditions and maintenance, as both can change.
Views along the trail and from the lookout
From Apex Lookout on the edge of Neerim, the view stretches across Tarago Reservoir, framed by the slopes of the Great Dividing Range. There are also views of the reservoir along the Rail Trail. The trail also passes through Crossover Regional Park. This means you can enjoy the landscape both from the named viewpoint and along the route. This distinction is useful for planning: the lookout is a specific destination, while the views along the Rail Trail are part of the route itself.
Neerim’s railway past
The Rokeby to Neerim Rail Trail is part of the original Warragul to Noojee rail line. Near Neerim, the trail follows this old line. It was built between 1890 and 1919 and closed in the 1950s. The timeline therefore spans a construction period of several decades, followed by a later closure. For visitors interested in railway history, the connection to the trail is especially tangible: the historic line is not just a topic associated with the route, but part of its context near Neerim. The landscape and railway history can thus be experienced along the same route.
Upgrades at Apex Lookout
The works in the first construction phase, from Crossover Regional Park to Apex Lookout in Neerim, were completed in August 2025. The Rokeby to Neerim Rail Trail has upgraded shared-use connections as far as Apex Lookout. At the lookout, a new toilet block replaced the former facility; Baw Baw Shire Council reported on this upgrade on 29 August 2025. For your own trip, it is still useful to check the latest information on local conditions and maintenance.
