Moonee Valley City can be explored through a variety of themes: the remarkable architectural history of the Incinerator Gallery, historic sites and cultural attractions, as well as walking trails and parks. When planning a stay, you can first decide whether exhibitions, history or time outdoors should take priority. The different points of interest make it easier to plan a trip around your interests without limiting it to a single theme.

Art and Industrial History

The Incinerator Gallery is the last surviving incinerator in Victoria designed by Walter Burley Griffin, and one of only six surviving facilities of its kind in Australia. As a gallery, it presents exhibitions, hosts workshops and events, and takes a curatorial approach that aligns art with social change. The program changes over time; if you want to see a particular exhibition or attend an event, check the current schedule.

Free history tours led by Incinerator Gallery volunteers are offered for local community groups. Check availability before planning a tour. A DDA-compliant lift with automatic doors provides easy, independent access to the lift and gallery spaces. If you have specific access requirements, it is advisable to confirm arrangements before your visit.

Historic Sites

The Clocktower Centre evolved from the Essendon and Flemington Mechanics Institute into Essendon Town Hall and then a cultural centre. When it opened in February 2000, it had a theatre with fixed seating for 500 visitors and an event space with 300 seats. These figures refer to the time of its opening. Queens Park also has a clear historical connection: in 1860, the park was the first stopping point on the Burke and Wills expedition.

In Essendon, Heritage Cottage is the oldest surviving timber building. A realistic virtual 3D tour of the culturally significant interior spaces is available for the cottage. A permanent Stolen Generations memorial commemorates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who were forcibly separated from their families and communities. Together, these sites make room for different historical themes, from the expedition to the remembrance of the Stolen Generations.

Walking Trails and Parks

Moonee Valley's walking trails include the Ascot Vale Walking Trail, the Maribyrnong River Walking Trail and the Moonee Ponds Heritage Trail. Separate, high-quality shared paths run along Moonee Ponds Creek, with similar paths also running along the Maribyrnong River. The options therefore include both named walking trails and paths along the two waterways.

Rosehill Park offers open space, barbecue facilities, a playground and a popular skate park. Woodlands Park is a historic park with open space, barbecue facilities and a children's playground. The two parks have different features: Rosehill includes a skate park, while Woodlands is described as a historic park. Both also offer open space and barbecue facilities.

Visitor Information

Tram route 59 to Airport West stops directly outside the Clocktower Centre. Check the timetable for the day of your visit, as public transport services may change. The Clocktower Café serves coffee, lunch, cakes, snacks and more substantial meals. This lets you combine a visit to the cultural centre with a break on site, while the nearby tram stop provides a convenient reference point for getting to the Centre.

Consider which of these themes matter to you during your stay, and choose a hotel to suit your plans.
