Mitcham: Bushland, Trails and History
Accommodation in Mitcham
Yarran Dheran Nature Reserve and Schwerkolt Cottage represent two different themes in Mitcham: bushland along Mullum Mullum Creek and a historic museum complex. There are also trails, including a 2 km linear shared trail and a 5 km art trail. If you’re looking for a hotel in Mitcham, these differences can guide your plans: nature, history or an art-themed walk each offer a different focus.
Nature and time outdoors
Yarran Dheran Nature Reserve is a 7-hectare bushland park in Mitcham, bordering Mullum Mullum Creek. The creek serves as an important habitat corridor for a variety of plants and animals. The combination of bushland and creek gives the place a clear connection to nature. Seven hectares is equivalent to 70,000 square metres.
The reserve has accessible toilets, drinking fountains, picnic tables and a lawn area. These facilities combine practical amenities with outdoor spaces. As facilities can change, check the information before your visit.
Environmental education visits to Yarran Dheran Nature Reserve are available by arrangement. If you plan to include this activity, arrange it in advance.
Trails with different focuses
The Eastlink Shared Trail in Mitcham is a 2 km linear trail with a sealed surface and a boardwalk. It partly follows the former unsealed Mullum Mullum Creek Track, which runs alongside Mullum Mullum Creek.
The Eastlink 5km Indigenous Art Trail starts near Schwerkolt Cottage on Deep Creek Road and features art by local Indigenous artists. At 5 km, it is 3 km longer than the 2 km Shared Trail; the trails also have different focuses: art by local Indigenous artists on the Art Trail, and a linear route with a sealed surface and boardwalk on the Shared Trail. Check current trail conditions before your walk.
Schwerkolt Cottage: history and visiting
Schwerkolt Cottage is a historic museum complex established in 1884. It borders Yarran Dheran bushland park in Mitcham. Schwerkolt Cottage includes historic buildings, walking trails, a cottage garden, a barbecue area and a family playground. The historic buildings and walking trails offer an opportunity to explore early colonial history in Whitehorse.
