Milloo is in the Shire of Campaspe, about 40 minutes north of Bendigo; travel time may vary depending on the route and conditions. For travellers interested in cultural history, Milloo Hall and the former St David’s Church offer tangible points of interest. Together with the Milloo Cricket and Recreation Reserve, they tell a story of architecture, remembrance and public recreation. If you’re looking for hotels for your trip, this historical focus can help you get your bearings in Milloo as a destination.

Milloo Hall: Architecture and event history

Milloo Hall is considered an outstanding example of an interwar public hall in the Bungalow style. It has local cultural and historical significance for the Shire of Campaspe in historical, social and aesthetic terms. On 11 October 2025, the heritage-listed hall celebrated its 100th anniversary. For many years, the Milloo Spring Fair was held there annually. The centenary was a single, dated event; the fair is part of the town’s earlier history of annual events.

Remembrance and public recreation

The former Anglican St David’s Church in Milloo was rebuilt in 1919 as a memorial to those who served in the First World War. Its history includes an honour board listing the names of service personnel from the First and Second World Wars. The church closed in 2017. The rebuilding commemorated the First World War, while the honour board included names from both world wars.

The Milloo Cricket and Recreation Reserve was set aside for cricket and other public recreation purposes. It adds a connection to sporting use and public recreation in the town’s history, complementing the hall and church. The three themes offer different perspectives on Milloo: architecture and event traditions, a historic memorial site, and the designated purposes of the reserve.

More to explore in the Shire of Campaspe

The wider destination of the Shire of Campaspe has its own cultural and landscape themes. In Lockington, the Lockington & District Living Heritage Complex is a local history museum and resource centre. Its historical exhibits include a shearing shed, a blacksmith’s shop, a dairy shed and a historic classroom; there is also a PMG hut and a Masonic lodge. The collection also includes a restored tram, a pop-top caravan, locally built tractors and a steam car. Its focus on exhibits from the district differs from Milloo’s history of its hall and memorials.

At the Port of Echuca in Echuca, the river port recreation precinct includes a Discovery Centre operated by the Shire of Campaspe Council, a museum, historic buildings, equipment displays and demonstrations. There are also rides on authentic paddle steamers and guided tours of the historic precinct. The focus here is the port and steam navigation, while Milloo’s local themes centre on the hall, church and reserve.

For a scenic perspective, the 19 km Waranga Rail Trail connects Rushworth with Murchison and passes Waranga Basin, bushland and farmland. Tongala also has more than 30 murals in its central shopping area, with a walking tour available of its award-winning street art. So, alongside Milloo’s local history, the wider Shire of Campaspe also offers examples of landscapes along a route and art in public spaces.
