Marnoo and the Heritage Precinct

The Marnoo Heritage Precinct covers the central area of Marnoo, with commercial, cultural, and residential buildings. Its central area is Newall Street: it ends at the railway line to the north and at the Primary School to the south. This locates the town centre precisely. The mix of buildings also draws attention to the centre’s different functions.

School, Church, and Architecture

Old Marnoo developed around a school that opened in June 1875 and was the first state school between Stawell and St Arnaud. The school building also served as a Presbyterian church and public hall until separate buildings were erected. The Presbyterian church, later called St Andrew’s, was relocated from Old Marnoo in 1914. Church buildings in the Marnoo Heritage Precinct are designed in the early 20th-century Gothic Revival style. These details offer different perspectives on local history: the early educational and community role in Old Marnoo, and a specific architectural classification within the Heritage Precinct.

Railway, Grain, and Merinos

The railway line serving Marnoo was officially opened on 15 June 1909. During the 1940–41 harvest, grain silos in Marnoo opened, leading to the introduction of bulk wheat handling. The two historic milestones have different focuses: the opening of the railway line and a change in grain handling. The 2023 Victorian State Merino Field Day in Marnoo was attended by business owners, stallholders, and 39 Merino sheep studs. In contrast to the silo history’s focus on wheat, the Field Day highlights Merino breeding and commercial participation. This distinguishes two different aspects of local history without conflating the events and developments chronologically.

The Marnoo Honour Rolls are an honour board on Newall Street, the same street that forms the central area of the Heritage Precinct. Local orientation and a specific connection to remembrance thus share the same street setting.

Shopping and Regional Connections

Kitchen Garden Mercantile is a visitor-oriented shop in Marnoo, located in the old post office. It opened on 23 January 2026. Its range includes practical kitchenware for home cooks and gardeners, as well as products from small producers and craftspeople. As the range may change, check the current selection before visiting if you are interested in a particular item.

The Silo Art Trail surrounds Marnoo and offers travellers a regional point of interest. It is geographically distinct from the Marnoo Heritage Precinct, which covers the central area of the town: one refers to the town centre, the other to the wider regional context. This distinction helps separate the town’s history in the centre from its broader regional context.
