Maribyrnong City: Nature, River and Industrial History
Accommodation in Maribyrnong City
Pipemakers Park is an eight-hectare reserve on Van Ness Avenue in Maribyrnong, beside the Maribyrnong River. The park has national historical, social and architectural significance and includes wetlands and walking paths. Other facets of Maribyrnong City range from the wetlands and bird habitat at Newells Paddock to the regional riverside route of the Maribyrnong River Trail. Offerings at the City of Maribyrnong level add a guided walk in Footscray, swimming, fitness and culinary themes to the picture.
Industrial history and museums at Pipemakers Park
The park’s significance is connected to some of the oldest and most extensive early industrial sites, where technological innovations in manufacturing were developed. The Eco-Museum at Pipemakers Park explores the region’s industrial, environmental, social and Indigenous history. Its subject matter therefore ranges from manufacturing and industrial heritage to environmental and social history.
The Living Museum’s offices, visitor centre, resource centre, library and bookshop are located in the Bluestone Buildings beside the Maribyrnong River at Pipemakers Park. Together with the park’s historical significance, they offer several cultural themes to explore during a stay: early industrial sites, manufacturing technology and the wider history of the region.
Play and nature
The nature playground at Pipemakers Park was designed to help children and their families connect with nature. It offers experiences for people of all abilities and encourages movement, climbing, sand and water play, and exploring and discovering nature. Alongside industrial heritage, active play is another specific interest to enjoy during a visit to the park.
The wetlands also offer different points of interest. Newells Paddock has wetlands that provide habitat for birds; Pipemakers Park also includes several wetlands. The distinction can help with choosing a route: Pipemakers Park has walking paths, while paths through Newells Paddock connect with the Maribyrnong River Trail.
The Maribyrnong River Trail
Further afield, the Maribyrnong River Trail follows the riverbank. It is a shared path for pedestrians and cyclists, where visitors can walk, jog or cycle. The route stretches for 25 kilometres, is mostly flat and has several entry and exit points. This makes the longer riverside trail different from the walking paths at Pipemakers Park. The multiple entry and exit points make it possible to include individual sections in your day’s plans rather than treating the entire route as a single trip.
More things to do in the City of Maribyrnong
At the City of Maribyrnong level, the Footscray Trail adds a guided walk through the historic Footscray central business district. Here, the focus is on the business district, while the Maribyrnong River Trail is a route along the riverbank. These different formats bring together local history and movement in their own ways.
The Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre, or MAC, replaced the outdated Footscray Swim Centre in July 2006. It is the City of Maribyrnong’s main facility for swimming, health, fitness and recreation. Slow Foodscray showcases local food vendors, street food and artisan producers, adding a culinary perspective to the area’s attractions and cultural themes.
