Goon Nure: Local History and Scale Competition

Geography and local history

Goon Nure is one of the localities in the Bairnsdale District. This is its regional context for planning your trip. The boundary of the Gippsland Lakes Ramsar site reaches the edge of Goon Nure’s local area and then follows the shore of Lake Victoria. For orientation, you can distinguish three points of reference: the district, the local area, and the boundary along the lakeshore. Goon Nure is also a historic Crown Township near Lake Victoria. This historic designation adds another aspect of local identity to its geographical context. If you are staying without a specific event date in mind, the town’s history is a consideration in its own right, alongside its location near Lake Victoria.

Scale competition in October 2026

A specific, dated reason to visit is the ASA Bairnsdale Scale Comp at VMAA State Field Eastern in Goon Nure. The scale competition weekend is scheduled for October 23–25, 2026; the public is welcome at this particular competition. It is a single competition weekend, not an annual event.

Flying events and the location of the airfield

The Bairnsdale And District Model Aero Club regularly holds flying events at VMAA State Field Eastern on Bengworden Road in Goon Nure. These recurring flying events give the field a regular connection to model aviation. When planning your trip, it is useful to distinguish between regular club events and the single scale competition weekend: one refers to recurring flying events, the other to a specific date.

The club’s location information, published in April 2024, places the airfield and club rooms of the Bairnsdale And District Model Aero Club on Bengworden Road, opposite Boundary Road in Goon Nure. Both are 11.5 km south of Bairnsdale. For planning your trip, this provides two kinds of orientation: the road name for the specific location within Goon Nure, and the distance for its position relative to Bairnsdale. When identifying the event venue, consider the field name, VMAA State Field Eastern, together with its road location. The location information dates from April 2024, while the competition is scheduled for October 2026. The two dates serve different purposes: the first dates the publication of the location description, and the second is the planned occasion for your trip to the scale competition.

Find a hotel for your stay

If you are travelling without a specific event date in mind, start with the destination instead: its regional association with the Bairnsdale District, its historic Crown Township designation, and its proximity to Lake Victoria add context to the locality. This gives you two different starting points: the event with a set date, and Goon Nure as a travel destination.
