Discover Clayton: festival, art and sport
Accommodation in Clayton
Clayton offers several distinct highlights to consider when planning a trip: the Clayton Festival, which takes place across three venues; the interactive Clayton Pinnacles; street art projects in two laneways; and the sports facilities at Meade Reserve. These experiences differ in character: a festival has an event date, the Pinnacles incorporate touch into their design, and the laneway projects connect art with a specific place.
The Clayton Festival and its venues
The Clayton Festival takes place in the heart of Clayton at the Clayton Community Centre, in its car park, and at the Clayton Aquatic and Health Club. The three venues give the festival a multi-site setting. This makes it possible to plan a stay around the festival, distinct from a trip focused on public art or sports facilities.
Sculptures to see and touch
The Clayton Pinnacles are located at the Clayton Community Centre. The sculptures combine visual and tactile elements and are designed for ongoing public access, interaction and touch. The tactile experience is therefore as much a part of the design concept as the visual impression. This is a different way of engaging with art than the laneway projects: the design of the Pinnacles explicitly includes interaction and touch. If you are interested in art where touch is part of the concept, the Clayton Pinnacles can be a distinct highlight of your trip to Clayton.
Street art in Mary Street and Thomas Street
The Mary Street laneways were transformed by the artist collective AWOL Crew in late 2015. The date places this art project in a specific historical period and attributes it to a named team. Another street art project is in the Thomas Street laneway: it includes works by TWOONE and Al Stark, as well as new lighting, trees and street furniture. In this project, changes to the streetscape are part of the overall picture alongside the artworks. The two projects can be distinguished by their features: Mary Street is characterised by its date and AWOL Crew, while Thomas Street brings together the named artists with several elements of streetscape design. If you are interested in street art, you can distinguish between a dated art project and one that includes additional changes to the streetscape.
Sports facilities at Meade Reserve
The sports facilities at Meade Reserve include cricket nets, an oval and a pavilion. The cricket nets provide a clear connection to cricket; the oval and pavilion round out the listed facilities. This gives you a concrete basis for considering Clayton from a sporting perspective as well. If sports facilities factor into your choice of destination, Meade Reserve offers a distinct point of interest alongside the festival and art experiences.
