Bonbeach combines a long sandy beach with public art and several open spaces with playgrounds. This lets you weigh up which side of the town is of particular interest to you.

Coastal Strip and Beach

Bonbeach Foreshore Reserve is a coastal strip with a broad, sandy beach stretching 1.5 kilometres. Distinctive bathing boxes and natural habitat are also part of this stretch. To the north, the reserve adjoins Chelsea Beach; to the south, it connects with the Patterson River. The bathing boxes add an architectural feature, while the natural habitat forms another aspect of the coastal strip. The beach, built features and habitat thus describe different sides of the same place.

Facilities at Bonbeach Beach

Bonbeach Beach has accessible toilets, as well as a shower and paths. Paid parking is also available. Dogs are allowed off leash in a designated area, and the beach is patrolled by the Bonbeach Surf Life Saving Club. If you plan to use these facilities or the dog area, check local conditions before your visit.

Public Art at the Station

At the pedestrian overpass at Bonbeach Station, there is a decorative metal screen referencing James Curtis’ painting “Lagoon in the Carrum Carrum Swamp – evening.” The screen is a specific public art motif, rather than just general decoration at the station. Those interested in public art will find a direct reference here to a specifically named painting. Together with the coastal strip, the motif gives Bonbeach another, cultural facet.

Playgrounds in Three Reserves

Bonbeach Reserve has a fenced, modern playground with interconnected wooden structures. Equipment includes a climbing wall, a rope-net ladder, a sliding pole, a double wave slide, a flying fox, a climbing frame, a sandpit, swings, spinning play equipment and balance beams. The wide variety of features sets this facility apart from the two smaller playgrounds.

Mernda Avenue Reserve is a small, fenced open space with a simple playground, swings, two spring riders and a marine-themed mural. Scotch Parade Reserve, in turn, is a narrow, landscaped area. It has a playground, swings, a two-seat and a four-seat seesaw, as well as seating. The facilities distinguish the three locations: Bonbeach Reserve offers a wide range of play equipment, Mernda Avenue adds a mural to its playground, and Scotch Parade also has seating and two seesaws of different sizes. If playgrounds are important to your plans for the area, you can use these differences to choose which reserve to visit. The playground facilities are described in municipal information; check local conditions before your visit.
