Ballarat combines gold rush history with gardens, water sports and wildlife encounters – four distinct themes for your stay. Lake Wendouree is in the centre of Ballarat, next to the Ballarat Botanical Gardens and near Victoria Park. History, landscape and sport are showcased here in clearly distinct aspects of the city.

Gold rush history: social perspectives and a boomtown

The Eureka Centre Ballarat explores the social history and cultural impacts of the Victorian gold rush. It honours the people who fought for miners’ rights and houses the Eureka Flag. The Centre therefore focuses both on the social consequences of the gold rush and on the fight for miners’ rights.

Sovereign Hill offers a different perspective: the living museum explores Ballarat’s history as a gold rush boomtown. By contrast, the Eureka Centre focuses on social history and cultural impacts, while Sovereign Hill covers Ballarat’s history as a boomtown. If you’re interested in the gold rush era, these offer different perspectives on the subject.

Eureka Stockade Memorial Park is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register and was added to the National Heritage List on 3 December 2004. The date refers to its addition to this list; its Victorian Heritage Register listing is a further status of the park.

Gardens between parkland and history

The Ballarat Botanical Gardens cover 40 hectares and combine open parkland with traditional-style gardens. They are on the western shore of Lake Wendouree, about four kilometres from Ballarat city centre. The approximate distance indicates the gardens’ location in relation to the city centre, while the two landscape types describe the character of the grounds.

Guided walks and tours cover the gardens’ highlights and the stories behind these historic grounds. This lets you explore the gardens through both their landscape and their history. If you’d like to include a tour in your plans, check the booking arrangements in advance, as they may change.

Lake Wendouree: recreation and rowing

Lake Wendouree offers opportunities for fishing, sailing and rowing. Its 2,000-metre rowing course hosted rowing competitions at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games. It continues to host competitions in school, club and high-performance rowing, as well as sailing.

The lake thus offers recreational activities alongside a history of competitive sport. This spans from the 1956 Olympic rowing competitions to the competitions still held there today. Rowing is not the only activity: sailing competitions are also part of the current sporting events at Lake Wendouree.

Wildlife encounters at Ballarat Wildlife Park

Ballarat Wildlife Park offers up-close encounters with koalas, giant tortoises, tree kangaroos, snakes and tigers. This adds a dedicated wildlife focus to the historical and landscape-related themes. The animal species listed demonstrate the range of these encounters, without requiring a particular interest in gold rush history, gardens or water sports.
