Apollo Bay: Beach, Great Ocean Walk and Culture
Accommodation in Apollo Bay
Apollo Bay brings together several distinct travel interests: the Great Ocean Walk, the beach and water sports, as well as history, art and harbour views. If you’re looking for a hotel in Apollo Bay, first consider which of these interests you want to shape your stay. The route, beach and cultural sites each add a different focus to your travel plans.
Great Ocean Walk: Route and scenery
The Great Ocean Walk links towering Otway forests, coastal heathlands, wild beaches, river crossings, rocky shore platforms and wind-swept cliffs. If you make the route the focus of your trip, you’ll find more than a single coastal vista: the trail connects a range of landscapes.
The Great Ocean Walk stretches for more than 100 kilometres from Apollo Bay to the Twelve Apostles; the full route is generally walked from east to west. Trail conditions can vary, so check the latest conditions and management notices before setting out.
Beach and water activities
Apollo Bay Beach is three kilometres long and faces east. At its southern end, near Point Bunbury and the harbour wall, it forms a sheltered bay that’s suitable for families and casual swimmers. This sheltered character applies to the southern section. Seasonal patrol arrangements may change; check current beach conditions before your visit.
As travel options, the Great Ocean Walk and Apollo Bay Beach differ in scale: the Great Ocean Walk stretches for more than 100 kilometres between two named endpoints, while the beach is three kilometres long and has a sheltered bay at its southern end. This helps you distinguish a longer walking route from beach-based activities.
At Apollo Bay Beach, you can swim, surf, fish and go boating. Apollo Bay Surf and Kayak offers surf lessons for beginners through to advanced surfers, as well as fully guided kayak tours to the Australian fur seal colony at Marengo Marine Sanctuary. If you’re looking for lessons, the surf courses are an option; the kayak tours offer a fully guided water-sports experience.
Museum, gallery and harbour
The Apollo Bay Museum is housed in the buildings from which the submarine cable connected Tasmania to the mainland. The collection includes historical artefacts about the history of Apollo Bay and its surrounds, as well as items from local shipwrecks such as Casino, Wollamai and Speculant. The museum thus connects local history with tangible links to the area’s maritime past.
The Arts Inc. Gallery is located in the bright front room of the heritage-listed Mechanic’s Hall on the Great Ocean Road in Apollo Bay. Alongside the museum’s historical collection, there’s a gallery in a building with its own heritage significance.
At Apollo Bay Harbour, visitors can stroll along the pier and enjoy views back towards Apollo Bay and the surrounding hills. This view of the town adds a distinct perspective on Apollo Bay and its surroundings to the historical and cultural attractions.
