Discover Altona
Accommodation in Altona
Altona can be explored through three distinct visitor highlights: Altona Beach, the shopping and dining street Pier Street, and Altona Homestead. Opening times also vary: beach mats are available year-round, while beach wheelchairs can only be borrowed seasonally and during certain weekend hours. Homestead opening hours fall on Tuesday, Saturday and the first Sunday of the month.
Altona Beach: beach mats and beach wheelchairs
Altona Beach is on the Esplanade. Beach mats are available year-round and make it easier for people with different abilities to access the water. According to Hobsons Bay City Council, Altona Beach was the first beach in Australia to offer this. Beach wheelchairs can also be borrowed free of charge during the summer months on weekends between 12 pm and 5 pm. The distinction is important when planning: the mats are available year-round, whereas beach wheelchair hire is seasonal and limited to certain hours. Check whether beach wheelchairs are currently available before your visit.
Pier Street: shopping and dining
Pier Street is a traditional shopping street with specialty shops, unique shopping destinations, supermarkets and local offerings. It is also home to more than 25 cafés and restaurants overlooking Altona Beach. The number and individual businesses may change. The street therefore offers a different focus from the beach: shopping and dining alongside views of the water. If this combination is important to your travel plans, you can make Pier Street a focus of your stay.
Markets at three locations
Altona Beach Market offers fresh produce, second-hand goods, and local art and crafts. Its locations are Pier Street, Weaver Reserve and Logan Reserve in Altona. Pier Street has a dual role: it is a shopping street as well as one of the market locations; Weaver Reserve and Logan Reserve are additional market locations. The offerings may vary. The mix of produce, second-hand goods and crafts sets the market apart from the shops and supermarkets on Pier Street. This lets you choose between a traditional shopping-street visit and the various market offerings.
Altona Homestead: history and visiting hours
Altona Homestead was built by Alfred and Sarah Langhorne in the mid-1840s. It is open Tuesdays from 11 am to 2 pm, Saturdays from 10 am to 12 pm, and on the first Sunday of each month from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm. Opening hours may change; check them before your visit. On the first Sunday of each month, visitors can enjoy Devonshire tea between 10:30 am and 2:30 pm. Check the current sessions and booking options in advance. Sunday therefore combines a visit to the historic building with this offering, while Tuesday and Saturday provide additional visiting times.
